The northeast region of Pará is the new frontier for expanding soybean cultivation in Pará. To this end, Embrapa experts test and validate new materials adapted to local soil and climate conditions, and sustainable technologies that intensify production in areas already open. The results of this work will be presented in 51st Expofac – Castanhal Agricultural Exhibition and Fair, from September 7th to 15th, at the municipality’s exhibition park.
Embrapa at Expofac 2019In addition to Embrapa's stand at Modelo Rural, where visitors will learn about the latest research results on soy in the region and talk to experts from the institution, two events will be held within the fair's program. The first, on 09/09 (Monday), at 8:30 am, is an exclusive workshop for communicators from the northeast region of the state. The objective is to show opinion makers how research is contributing to the expansion of this cultivation with economic, social and environmental sustainability. And on 10/09 (Tuesday), from 8:30 am to 12 pm, is the Seminar “Challenges and Perspectives of Soybean Culture in the Northeast of Pará”. The event, which is free and open to the public, brings experts from Embrapa to talk about the evolution of soy in Pará and Brazil. Expofac is the largest and oldest event in the region focused exclusively on agribusiness in the Northeast region of Pará. This year the event organizers expect to generate around 30 million reais in business during the days of the event. |

The Castanhal region has favorable soil and climate conditions, and also has other important characteristics, according to the president of the Castanhal Rural Union, Francisco Gomes da Silva. “We have already established logistics, as we are close to roads and logistics distribution centers, the presence of farms that consume bran and animal feed, the presence of large areas that are already open, flat and have a lot of rain”, says the producer.
Embrapa's work points to two soybean cultivars with high grain yield potential and protection against the main pests that attack crops: the BRS 9383IPRO e BRS 9180IPRO. Agronomist Roni Azevedo, a researcher at Embrapa, says that the institution's work contributes to the opening of new agricultural frontiers based on technology and sustainability. “We use the experience of Paragominas, which is the largest grain producing hub in the state, for Castanhal, Thailand and Bragança”, adds Azevedo.
In the 2017/2018 harvest, soybeans were cultivated on 35 million hectares in Brazil, resulting in production of 119 million tons (IBGE). IBGE data show that the state of Pará planted, in 2018, around 560 thousand hectares of soybeans, more than 300 thousand in the Paragominas region, which is the main grain producing hub in the state. Production in Pará, in 2018, was 1 million and 640 thousand tons of grain, and the expectation is that 1 million and 800 thousand tons will be harvested in this year's harvest, according to IBGE. The state is the second largest soybean producer in the North region, behind only Tocantins, which in 2018 produced 2 million and 500 thousand tons, and the 13th in Brazil.
