Embrapa opens selection for commercialization of new corn hybrid

The Embrapa announces the opening of selection for producers interested in the production and commercialization of seeds of a new corn hybrid that will be launched, the BRS 2107. The process foresees the selection of up to five producers who will receive seeds of the new hybrid to validate its performance agronomic, its progenitors and the seed production system. The selected companies, if they are interested in signing the Licensing Agreement, will have the right to register this initial area, multiply and commercialize the seeds obtained from the cultivar. The BRS 2107 cultivar, developed by Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, is a conventional hybrid of the “top-cross”, obtained by crossing a simple hybrid – with greater productive potential – and a variety. “The new cultivar allows for high yields in seed production, since the simple hybrid (female progenitor) provides high productivity and the variety (male progenitor) enables broad pollen production and variation in its release, which allows for better flowering synchronization. and better efficiency in pollination”, explains agronomist Reginaldo Resende Coelho, from Embrapa's Secretariat for Innovation and Business (SIN).

According to the agronomist, the “top-cross” allows the planting of the parents at the same time, facilitating the installation of the seed production field and eliminating the need for additional sowing of one of the parents. “The proportion of planting between female and male parent lines can be increased, enabling a greater number of female parent lines, per planted area and, consequently, greater yield in seed production. Therefore, the BRS 2107 cultivar allows for excellent yields in seed production, which reduces production costs, making the selling price of seeds competitive in the market”, highlights Coelho.

According to researcher Roberto dos Santos Trindade, from the Genetic Improvement area of ​​Embrapa Milho and Sorgo, the cultivar has an early cycle, wide adaptability throughout the Brazilian territory and stability for planting both in the harvest and in the off-season, with excellent productive performance, the main purpose being grain production. “The hybrid also has a low percentage of lodging and breakage, making it a great alternative for low and medium investment crops, due to the competitive price of its seeds and its agronomic performance”, he reinforces.
