In the region with a temperate climate, during the winter, pruning is the main management of the grapevine. However, another very important practice during this period is the planting of vine seedlings, which is preferably carried out until the end of spring. This period is ideal for planting so-called bare root seedlings, sold in the dormant stage (without the presence of leaves).

Seeking to follow the main practices recommended at each stage of the vine cycle, Embrapa launches the second video in the “In Practice” series, addressing the topic of Planting. Presented by agronomist Daniel Grohs, the video provides the main guidelines before, during and after planting, which begins with ordering and choosing quality seedlings, usually carried out in the previous year.

The video was created both for those who are already producers or for those who want to start the activity, commercially or in their backyard. Recommendations on the types of seedlings, preparation of the area and care after sprouting are present and complement the publications: Practical Guide of Technical Indications for Planting Vine Seedlings, Visual Guide for Seedling Assessment and Checklist for planting, previously released and available for free download on Embrapa Grape and Wine Portal.

The launch of the video takes place during the 3rd Meeting for the Training of Videira Nursery Workers, which brings together around 80 professionals at the Research Company, in Bento Gonçalves (RS), with the aim of serving, together with the publications, as technical material simplified to further qualify the development of culture. "Based on the participants' comments and the number of hits and shares, which immediately boosted the video, we are sure that the material will make a difference in the field," said Grohs.

The series "In practice" is a production of Embrapa Uva e Vinho and is being produced based on the main demands presented to the Citizen Assistance Service related to viticulture and pomiculture. It does not have a defined frequency, but the team's expectation is that at least two more videos will be broadcast by the end of 2019.
