During the 52nd Amapá Agricultural Expofair, an event held by the state government from September 29th to October 8th, Embrapa will offer two free mini-courses. Registration will take place 30 minutes before the start of activities, and participants will receive certificates.

25 places are offered for the short course “Community Forestry Management of the Amapá National Forest (Flona)”, on 2/10 (Monday), from 15pm to 19pm, at the Embrapa stand, to be taught by the engineer researcher forestry Marcelino Carneiro Guedes. For the mini-course “Cultivation of elephant grass: BRS Capiaçu and BRS Kurumi” 25 places are also offered. It will be held on the morning of October 7th (Saturday), from 8am to 12pm, at the Embrapa stand. This mini-course will be taught by zootechnical analyst Daniel Montagner, from Embrapa Amapá; and by the zootechnician from the State Institute of Extension, Assistance and Rural Development (Rurap), Saulo Lima do Rosário.

The Amapá National Forest (Flona) covers an area of almost 460 thousand hectares, located in the Guiana Shield region, covering parts of the municipalities of Ferreira Gomes, Pracuúba and Amapá. This Conservation Unit was created in 1989 to enable sustainable timber exploration, in addition to aiming to protect biodiversity and the continuity of low-impact activities carried out by traditional populations.

BRS Capiaçu is a vegetatively propagated elephant grass cultivar for use under cutting. The main application is to be used for the production of silage or green chopped, to be supplied in the trough for animals in milk and beef production systems. Due to its high production potential (50t DM/ha/year), it can also be used for the production of energy biomass. It has dense tussocks and erect culms, which facilitates mechanical harvesting; long, wide, green leaves.

BRS Kurumi is an elephant grass cultivar propagated vegetatively through cuttings. The main application is to be used in animal production systems under grazing. The cultivar stands out for having a high potential for forage production with excellent nutritional characteristics. It has semi-open clumps; green leaf and stem and short internode. It has vigorous vegetative growth with rapid leaf expansion, intense tillering and low growth.

Embrapa’s stand at the 52nd Amapá Agricultural Expo has the theme “Embrapa 50 years: its future inspires our science”; aims to provide visitors with interactive activities linked to research carried out to meet the demands of Amapá and the Amazon estuary.
