The appropriate choice of rootstock is essential for the productivity and longevity of orchards. Fundecitrus, in partnership with Embrapa and the Sylvio Moreira Citriculture Center, is evaluating the potential of dwarfing rootstocks in dense orange plantations, with the aim of facilitating the harvest and control of the main citrus pests and diseases.

The studies, which have been taking place since 2016, evaluated six rootstocks and were conducted in the central region of the citrus belt. The scion variety used was Natal IAC orange and the control rootstock was Swingle citrumelo, as it is the most used in São Paulo.

With 1.212 plants per hectare, an average much higher than that of the belt, dwarfing rootstocks have made it possible to increase density, balancing production and productivity.
