With a focus on developing the Rural Insurance Program (PSR), the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, will hold a technical meeting on Monday (22). The meeting will be held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and will discuss the possibilities for contracting a policy to insure the production of Brazilian farmers.

“We are thinking about a line of credit in which producers can help themselves with very affordable interest rates”, highlighted Minister Fávaro in an interview with Rádio Vila Real, this Wednesday (17). “We are going to discuss a new model of rural insurance. More efficient, more technological and uses technology to improve the way of hiring and is cheaper. We want to help all producers with rural insurance, to protect themselves from bad weather,” he added.

In 2023, Mapa managed to fully apply the available resources, subsidizing just over 107 thousand policies for around 70 thousand producers. During the year, there was an increase in the number of insured crops, reaching 6,25 million hectares. The amount covered represents considerable coverage, close to R$40 billion. Thus, for each real invested in the subsidy, around R$42 reais were protected.

Furthermore, to expand and diversify agricultural credit alternatives at more competitive costs for this segment, a rural financing line in dollars was launched. Around R$3 billion were financed last year.

The PSR

The Rural Insurance Premium Subsidy Program offers farmers the opportunity to insure their production at a reduced cost, through financial assistance from the federal government. The economic subsidy granted by Mapa can be claimed by any individual or legal entity that cultivates or produces species covered by the Program and also allows the amounts to be supplemented by subsidies granted by states and municipalities.
