Despite the low insolation, canola grows well in RS

With 44% of crops in flower, canola is developing in good health in the main producing regions in Rio Grande do Sul. Even with unfavorable weather conditions, such as low sunshine, the Emater/RS-Ascar de Santa Rosa region records 51% of crops in the vegetative development phase, 44% in full flowering and 5% in grain filling. According to the Economic Information released this Thursday (16/07) by Emater/RS-Ascar, in agreement with the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development (Sepdr), with prices following the evolution of soybeans, the Producers expect good profitability from the established canola crops, which demonstrate an alternative cultivation system to the soybean-wheat binomial, typical in the region. The sales price is R$ 102,40/sc. of 60 kilos.

In wheat, sowing reached 97% of the area planned for this harvest in RS, which is 915,7 thousand hectares. The week with predominantly overcast weather and significant accumulated volumes of rain did not allow planting to be completed and caused difficulties in carrying out cultural treatments in the planted crops. Wheat sowing was completed in the Emater/RS-Ascar regions of Pelotas, Frederico Westphalen, Passo Fundo, Erechim and Santa Rosa. In general, the crops have a good plant stand and good vegetative development. In already established crops, excessive rainfall, low temperatures and days with low light delayed the development of the crop and made mechanical operations to control invasives and diseases difficult.

White oats in the Ijuí region are at a more advanced stage of development than wheat. Despite this, the crops continue to develop well, with a slightly more yellowish color than normal, a reflection of the sequence of days with low light. In general, there are prospects for good production potential, as the plants are vigorous, have a well-developed flag leaf, there are a good number of tillers and the panicle is beginning to produce a good number of spikelets. Producers continue, within the possibilities of favorable weather, to control weeds and apply nitrogen fertilizers under cover, without the need to control diseases and pests.

Barley

In the Erechim region, crops are in germination and vegetative development. The average price of the product is R$60,00/sc. of 60 kilos. In Ijuí, sowing was interrupted due to heavy rainfall. With high humidity, an increase in leaf spots was observed. Producers have started applying fungicides and applying nitrogen fertilizers as top dressing.

SUMMER CROPS

Soybean

Producers continue planning activities for the next harvest. At the moment, soil analyzes continue, green manure crops, limestone corrections, acquisition of inputs, controls of invasive plants and preparation of credit projects with the advice of the Emater/RS-Ascar offices. In the administrative region of Erechim, around 30% of the soybeans to be planted are already sold on the futures market. Producers demonstrate confidence in the economic result of the crop in the next harvest, especially due to current grain prices being above R$ 100,00/sc. and the favorable exchange rate.

Corn

The off-season is the time to prepare for action in the following harvest in terms of planning planting areas and financing them. There is already a demand for producers to prepare rural credit plans. In the Emater/RS-Ascar de Santa Rosa region, crop funding projects are forwarded to financial agents, which release resources for the purchase of inputs, in accordance with the VBC defined for the region: value of R$ 3.200,00 per hectare for normal cultivation and R$4 thousand per hectare for high-tech corn crops. In the municipalities coastal to the Uruguay River, soil preparation and desiccation activities have already started, with planting expected from July 25th; however, most municipalities should start planting at the beginning of August.

Rice

In the regions of Pelotas and Bagé, areas with drainage conditions are being prepared in advance for the next harvest. Producers have been using the stubble for foraging for beef cattle.
