The deadline for soybean sowing throughout the territory of Pará was extended following a request from the Agricultural Defense Agency of the State of Pará (Adepará) to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa). The new calendar was released by the federal government on December 27th, through Ordinance SDA/Mapa nº 980/2023.

Excess heat, with records of high temperatures and lack of rain, caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon, contributed to an unfavorable scenario for the development of soybeans in the State. Thus, the production sector requested an extension from the Defense Agency, which took the demand to Mapa.

The director of Plant Defense and Inspection at Adepará, Lucionila Pimentel, highlights that extending the calendar is an essential measure to face the challenges posed by this year's weather conditions. “Our goal is to ensure that producers do not face significant losses due to climate-related factors,” she added.

The initiative, although an exceptional measure, reflects the Defense Agency's commitment to seeking effective solutions to face climate challenges and guarantee the sustainability of agribusiness in Pará.

The extension of the deadline will benefit producers directly affected by the adverse weather at the start of the 2023/2024 harvest. In addition to Pará, the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Piauí, Goiás and Tocantins had their deadlines extended.
