The annual survey of planting intentions by Datagro Grãos for the 2024/25 harvest points to an increase in Brazil's soybean area for the 18th consecutive year, going from 46,184 million hectares in the 2023/24 season to 46,890 million ha, which would represent a increase of 1,5%.

“It is important to highlight that these are preliminary numbers and that any more sudden reaction in prices over the next 60 days could bring about a change in this proportion of increase”, says Flávio Roberto de França Junior, economist and content leader at Datagro Grãos.

The consultancy indicates a productivity of 3.554 kg/ha in this first moment, with potential production of 166,644 million tons. If confirmed, this volume would be 12% higher than the revised crop harvested this year, of 149,262 million tons.

According to a survey carried out among soybean growers, the increase in area should occur homogeneously throughout the country, just like this year. “In greater intensity in the states of the North and Northeast region”, highlights França Junior.

Corn

The preliminary analysis carried out by Datagro Grãos estimates a decline in corn areas for both the summer and winter harvests. The total area of the 1st harvest is expected to reach 3,894 million ha, compared to 4,053 million ha in the 2023/24 season – 2,544 million ha in the Center-South and 1,350 million ha in the North/Northeast.

Considering the hypothesis of the incidence of the La Niña phenomenon and the use of technology close to normality, the 1st corn harvest has a production potential of 23,351 million tons, 1% lower than the damaged harvest harvested in 2024, of 23,693 million tons – 17,276 million of t in the Center-South and 6,075 million t in the North/Northeast.

As for the 2025 winter harvest, although with very preliminary numbers, the initial trend also indicates a decline in the area. In total Brazil, the projection is 16,855 million ha, 2% below the 17,207 million ha this year – 14,005 thousand ha in the Center-South and 2,850 thousand ha in the North/Northeast.

Considering regular weather, the production forecast for the 2nd harvest is 93,608 million tons, stable compared to the 93,315 million tons of the complicated current harvest. In total for the two harvests, Brazil has an area forecast for 2024/25 of 20,749 million tons. ha, 2% below the 21,260 million ha in the 2023/24 season, and potential production of 116,959 million tons, stable in relation to the current harvest, of 117,008 million tons.
