Last week, the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply signed a technical cooperation agreement with the ILPF Network Association to promote the adoption and expansion of the Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forestry System (ILPF) throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro. The agreement, initially scheduled for three years, includes identifying areas with potential for system implementation, creating Technological Reference Units (URTs), and developing a comprehensive technical training program.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the state of Rio de Janeiro has 1,4 million hectares dedicated to agricultural use, half of which is pastureland, with 30% of it showing some level of degradation. Francisco Matturro, executive president of the ILPF Network, emphasizes the region's potential for adopting the ILPF system.

"Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration means the emancipation of producers. How? Because it provides short-term income, which comes from grain and cereal crops. There's livestock in the medium term and the forestry component in the long term," he assesses.

For Flávio Campos Ferreira, Secretary of State for Agriculture, the signing of the cooperation agreement solidifies Rio de Janeiro's historic commitment to sustainable agriculture. "We are moving beyond mere intentions and toward practical actions that will transform the reality of Rio's producers. With technology, training, and innovation, we will restore degraded areas, increase productivity, and generate new opportunities for the sector. This is a decisive step toward strengthening the competitiveness of our agriculture and reaffirming the state's leading role in the transition to a low-carbon economy," he concludes.

About ILPF

ILPF is a production strategy that combines different production systems: agricultural, livestock, and forestry in the same area, whether in consortium, succession, or crop rotation, generating benefits for all activities.

The practice sustainably intensifies land use, protects and fertilizes the soil, promotes savings on inputs and consequent cost reduction, and simultaneously increases productivity in the same area, diversifying production and revenue sources.
