Climate facilitates nighttime planting, but challenges persist for wheat producers in Rio Grande do Sul
The lack of moisture in the soil, aggravated by moderate winds, compromised the uniformity of seed deposition
Corn, a cereal known as the golden grain, was the highlight this Friday (21) at the Dalla Libera Farm, in Nova Mutum, Mato Grosso (MT), which received the National Opening of the Corn Harvest 2nd Harvest of the 2023 cycle -24. Cereal production in this harvest should be 45,8 million tons in the State, according to an estimate by the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea).
For the vice-president of the Association of Soy and Corn Producers of Mato Grosso (Aprosoja-MT), Luiz Pedro Bier, corn cultivation is consolidated in the state of Mato Grosso as the crop that follows soybean cultivation.
“Corn cultivation is what makes Brazilian agriculture special. It was what led to the consolidation of the second harvest, it was what led to direct planting in straw, this very sustainable practice that fixes carbon in the system and avoids releasing carbon into the atmosphere,” he said.
Cereal producers in Mato Grosso contribute significantly to grain production in Brazil, as the state of Mato Grosso may be responsible for 40,1% of the corn produced in the country. According to the National Supply Company (Conab), Brazilian farmers can harvest approximately 114,1 million tons of golden grain.
Despite the high quantity harvested in both Mato Grosso and Brazil, corn production may decline in both. In the last harvest (22/23), Mato Grosso farmers harvested 52,5 million tons, almost seven million more than can be produced in the current harvest.
In national numbers, the drop could be even more significant, since in the last harvest production was 131,8 million, around 17 million more than can be produced in the current harvest.
However, there are rural producers who can overcome uncertain situations. This is the case of the owner of the farm that received the National Opening of the 2nd Harvest Corn Harvest, Luiz Carlos Dalla Libera, who with the regular harvest reduced his costs and should not suffer financial losses.
“We started harvesting and the harvest seems a little smaller than our expectations. I already went through a soybean harvest that had a decline, but at least the corn is regular”, he concluded.
During the event, rural producers attended two information panels. The first was to debate the "Moratorium and its Impact on Corn and Soybeans" and also to talk about "Sustainability".
Finally, the topic discussed was "Farmers References in Productivity". Authorities such as Paulo Bertolini, president of the Brazilian Association of Corn Producers (Abramilho), Vilmondes Tomain, president of the Agriculture and Livestock Federation of Mato Grosso (Famato), Coronel Fernanda, federal deputy, Nilson Leitão, president of the Institute, were present at the event. Pensar Agro (IPA) and Ilson Redivo, president of the Sinop Rural Union.
