Adequate crop nutrition is essential for good crop yield and is part of the management of all crops. Without nutrients there is no healthy growth, normal development of leaves and flowers and, as a consequence, production. Furthermore, nutritional deficiency can weaken the plants' defense system and make them more vulnerable to various diseases.

According to Guilherme Bavia, product manager at BRANDT do Brasil, among the most important micronutrients for the full development of the most diverse crops is copper, which acts in photosynthesis, reproduction, nitrogen fixation and helps in resistance to diseases. “It is a micronutrient that plays an essential role, being a key component of several enzymes that help the vegetable metabolize carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. This aids in the healthy growth of the vegetative and reproductive state,” he explains.

The expert comments that copper directly interferes with the growth and reproduction of fungi, bacteria and other organisms that cause diseases in plants. “When there is adequate nutrition, the plant becomes more tolerant to environmental adversities, as copper helps in the formation of lignin, which reinforces cell walls and makes it difficult for disease-causing agents to infect.”

Deficiency and excess

“Copper is necessary for the synthesis of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for photosynthesis, which is the process by which plants convert sunlight into chemical energy. Therefore, its deficiency can lead to chlorosis (discoloration) of the leaves, reduced growth and lower production”, explains Bavia.

According to him, in relation to excess micronutrients, the symptoms are different. “High amounts can cause slow growth, tissue death and phytotoxicity, causing burning, necrosis and deformation of the leaves. Therefore, it is important to pay special attention to the preparation of the application mixture, with emphasis on pH, volume and mixing products”, he highlights.

In the technology present in the Smart Copper product, there is a supply of readily available and high-performance copper for the plant. “Through intelligent nutritional management, the plant synthesizes defense compounds and strengthens its natural barriers against pathogens, while at the same time being well nourished for its full development. It is a technology that facilitates management and application, as it provides the nutrient readily available and is not incompatible with pesticides in tank mixes”, concludes the specialist.
