Cooxupé won first place among agricultural cooperatives in the 2023 Yearbook of Minas Gerais Cooperativism, published by the Ocemg System in July. The report provides economic and social information on the segment with the base year 2022. The publication divides cooperatives in Minas Gerais into seven branches, namely: Agriculture; Consumption; Credit; Infrastructure; Work, Production of Goods and Services; Health; Transport.
According to the yearbook, Cooxupé is in first place among the 20 largest cooperatives in Minas Gerais, in the agricultural sector, in all data analyzed: members, employees, total income/revenue, surpluses before allocations, total assets, net worth and social capital.
In terms of the number of members, Cooxupé had 18.119 members, a variation of 6,4% compared to 2021. In terms of the number of employees, in 2022 Cooxupé had 2.618 employees. Therefore, a growth of 5,4%.
Total income/revenue amounted to R$ 10.244.942.715, an increase of 51,3%. In leftovers before allocations, Cooxupé reached R$ 277.335.998, with R$ 17.598,58 being leftovers per member.
The total assets of the coffee cooperative were R$7.692.218.702 in 2022. Net equity reached R$1.925.602.992, while share capital was estimated at R$225.785.391.
“For us, at Cooxupé, it is a source of pride to win first place among cooperatives in the agricultural sector. It is proof that our more than 18 thousand cooperative families, our employees and also the board act bravely for the best results, for the development of the communities where we are located and to produce the best coffee”, highlighted the president of the cooperative, Carlos Augusto Rodrigues de Melo.
The yearbook highlights that agricultural cooperatives are present in several production chains that are essential for the country's economic development, as they effectively contribute to the generation of income and jobs.
Furthermore, the publication shows that industry associations generate economies of scale in the buying and selling processes, in addition to making their members' businesses viable, adding value to production.
“The sector provides inputs, storage, classification and processing of products, also offering members technical assistance and support with regard to technological development”, informs the report.
There are, in total, 190 thousand members in Minas Gerais. They are organized into 193 agribusiness cooperatives. And, to meet this contingent, more than 19 thousand workers are directly employed by companies that follow this economic model.
“The agricultural sector recorded, in 2022, an economic turnover of R$ 44,8 billion. Presenting an increase of 24,5% compared to 2021, being responsible for 37,9% of all economic movement of cooperatives in Minas Gerais”, adds the publication.
In the coffee segment, the report highlights that 57% of the beans produced in Minas Gerais passed through a cooperative. Data from the National Supply Company (Conab) shows that the state is the largest coffee producer in Brazil, representing 43,1%, with an important participation of cooperatives in this production chain. In 2022, of all coffee produced in the country, 24,6% passed through a Minas Gerais cooperative.
Furthermore, Minas Gerais producers produced 22 million bags of coffee in 2022. A reduction of 0,8% compared to 2021. According to the Ocemg System, the reduction is related to climate problems, such as hailstorms. and frost in some regions during the coffee production cycle, recording losses.
