After a year full of challenges in Brazilian coffee farming, the Regional Coffee Growers Cooperative in Guaxupé -- Cooxupé released a positive report on the 2021 financial year. The results were presented at the Ordinary General Assembly.
The distribution of surpluses to associated producers amounts to more than R$120 million, compared to a result of R$356 million and a turnover of R$6,7 billion. In addition to additionally receiving the amount related to leftovers, Cooxupé's cooperative families had other gains throughout 2021 from awards granted in kind for certification, recognition, coffee quality and capital refund programs.
Receipt and shipments 2021
With the targets achieved as expected, after being revised due to adverse weather conditions, Cooxupé received, last year, 5.6 million bags of Arabica coffee. Shipments resulted in 6.027 million bags, of which 4.9 million corresponded to direct exports to customers in 50 countries. In relation to the specialty coffee market, the cooperative's shipments totaled 147.915 bags, 131.346 for the foreign market and 16.569 for the domestic market, through SMC Specialty Coffees.
“It is important to remember that in 2021 the climate had a huge influence with high temperatures, lack of rain and the occurrence of frost. In addition, logistical problems also had an impact, such as the container crisis and the lack of labor at the ports. All this considering, still, a pandemic scenario. However, we managed to achieve our results, passing them on to our members”, highlights vice-president Osvaldo Bachião Filho.
Production and profile of members
In 2021, a year with a low biennial period, Cooxupé members produced 7,49 million bags, in the cooperative's area of operation, which comprises the South of Minas, Matas de Minas, Cerrado of Minas Gerais and the middle of Mogiana in the state of São Paulo.
Of the more than 17 thousand members, 97,7% correspond to family farming, that is, mini and small producers. The others add up the results of the cooperative as medium, large and mega producers.
When considering the receipt of coffee from Cooxupé in 2021, according to CONAB, the volume received by the Minas Gerais cooperative represented 18% of the national production of Arabica coffee and 26% of the production of this type of coffee in the state of Minas Gerais.
Investments
Cooxupé invested more than R$ 104.7 million in infrastructure throughout 2021. Among the investments are the opening of the São Pedro da União Center (MG) in a new space; the purchase of land for the expansion of the cooperative's branch in the city of Campos Gerais (MG); renovations and expansions in Alfenas, Cape Verde and Nova Resende (MG), in addition to the new structure that now houses the Leaf and Soil Analysis Laboratory that provides this type of service to coffee growers.
roasting
Responsible for the production of roasted, ground and grain coffees from Cooxupé, Torrefação grew 39% in 2021, in relation to the opening of new customers in Brazilian retail compared to the active portfolio in 2020. The total coffee produced was 12.9 million of kilos. The number of bags processed was more than 259 thousand.
Refund
In 2019, Cooxupé implemented the Capital Refund by Age Program to benefit members over 75 years of age with the return of the capital quota. Since the creation of the program, the cooperative has already refunded more than R$30 million. In 2021, the amount refunded was more than R$5 million.
“Over the last two years, we have faced major challenges generated by the pandemic and, mainly, by the climate. However, the cooperative and its members overcame the obstacles, as evidenced by the 2021 balance sheet. It is also true that the scenario of price appreciation in the international market had an influence on our results, but the unity and trust of producers once again allowed to Cooxupé growing numbers. The year 2022 still holds challenges, with the consequences of frost, for example. We recommend that our members be very cautious and, even if the market is currently offering good opportunities, it is necessary to have a medium-term vision so that our activities continue to be strengthened and strategically planned”, warns the president of the cooperative, Carlos Augusto Rodrigues de Melo.
