The Cerrado Coffee Growers' Cooperative (Coocacer) and Yara Brasil announced a strategic partnership to expand low-carbon coffee production in the Cerrado Mineiro region. The agreement was announced during the Opening of the Minas Gerais Coffee Harvest in Araguari (MG), and provides for the use of fertilizers with up to 90% lower carbon emissions, in addition to the adoption of sustainable agricultural technologies and practices.
According to Eliane Cristina Barbosa Cardoso, executive director of Coocacer, the initiative is aligned with the cooperative’s Sustainable Coffee Development Program and strengthens the commitment to more viable coffee farming with less environmental impact. “We believe that the union between conscious producers, science and engaged suppliers is essential to mitigate climate change, while maintaining coffee productivity and quality,” she says.
The new partnership will allow cooperative members access to low-carbon fertilizer, developed with renewable sources such as biomethane and water electrolysis. In addition, the contract includes technical support and digital tools to improve productivity and reduce the climate footprint of crops.
Guilherme Schmitz, Vice President of Marketing and Agronomy at Yara Brazil, highlights that the partnership contributes to the decarbonization of Brazilian agriculture. “We have fertile ground for a low-carbon production model with high agricultural and commercial performance,” he emphasizes.
By adopting these solutions, Coocacer seeks to consolidate the region as a reference in the production of sustainable coffees, highlighting Cerrado Mineiro as a hub of innovation and environmental responsibility.
