It is impossible to discuss weeds and not address one of the biggest ghosts surrounding the subject – Resistance to herbicides. The issue causes alarm among farmers and a lot of concern among researchers and agronomists, since in uncontrolled situations, invasive plants can cause losses of more than 90%. The result would be certain damage at a time when the agricultural sector serves as a mainstay for the national economy. The solution? Understand the problem in depth, following what the scientific community has developed and recommended in partnership with professionals in the field.
To facilitate this exchange of information, the XXX Brazilian Congress of Weed Science, held in Curitiba (PR), from 22 to 26 August, brings together the main authorities in weed research, together with representatives from private industry, public bodies and rural producers.
Pigweed
The event will feature a broad debate on the topic, with details on the latest species of resistant invasive plants identified on Brazilian soil, such as Amaranthus palmeri, popularly known as Caruru. The main weed in agricultural areas in the United States was identified in Mato Grosso, in areas with soybean, corn and cotton crop rotation, in 2014.
According to technical circular nº19/year 2015, published by the Instituto Mato-Grossense do Algodão (IMA-MT), when the population of A. palmeri is not controlled, crop yield losses can reach 91% in corn, 79% in soybeans and 77% in cotton. The data is from crops in the United States.
The Agricultural Engineer, Dr. Anderson Luis Cavenaghi, professor at UNIVAG - Centro Universitário de Várzea Grande – MT and one of the professionals who signed the circular mentioned above, debates the topic during the panel New resistance problems in Brazil - Broadleaf, which will be held on Wednesday (24), from 16pm to 17:45pm.
“To prevent the plant from spreading, there is inspection work in the areas, carried out by INDEA-MT and MAPA – MT, survey work to identify the species, and research carried out by different institutions, seeking to evaluate possible management for this weed plant. . Due to its very aggressive characteristics, this species can quickly increase its dispersion area. Infested properties report an increase in the use of herbicides and, consequently, an increase in production costs”, warns Cavenaghi.
New frontiers – Buva and Amargoso
Considered the main problem for soybean farmers, the two plants have expanded their presence throughout the country. Although worrying, the researchers state that control alternatives implemented with planning, focusing on prevention and correctly following guidelines, guarantee the control of weeds, which compete with soybeans for nutrients.
“Prevention and control measures must be implemented professionally and with due planning. Planning is done, in the vast majority of cases, taking into account the immediate cost and leaving aside the reasoning of the medium and long term benefit”, explains professor, Dr. Jamil Constantin, from the State University of Maringá (UEM).
As examples of effective alternatives “we can use herbicides with different mechanisms of action, a combination of herbicides with pre- and post-emergence action, and consolidate production systems that result in an unfavorable environment for weeds.”, concludes Dr. Jamil Constantin, who will address more details on the topic during the CBCPD 2016 scientific program, on Thursday, (25), from 16pm to 17:45pm
White grass
Another resistant weed that has worried producers and researchers is white grass (Chloris elata), registered for the first time in 2015, in the state of Paraná. “In recent years it has been observed that some applications of glyphosate have failed to control this weed. Therefore, the frequent use of this herbicide can make this weed a major challenge for grain producers in Brazil. The problem has also been observed in sugarcane cultivation, mainly in conveyors and irrigation canals, where glyphosate has not effectively controlled the weed”, explains Prof. Dr. Pedro Jacob Christoffoleti, from the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture – ESALQ.
