Population growth requires more and more efforts to meet the demand for food in the world, seeking alternatives that are not restricted exclusively to increasing production areas and crop productivity. In this sense, the role of food losses and waste has been widely discussed and is also highlighted in the most recent study by the National Supply Company (Conab). The objective of the analysis is to evaluate the extent of grain loss over the last 21 years at a national and global level, and to highlight its representativeness based on monetary parameters and energy content for the human diet.

The document analyzes grain losses in the world, occurring at all stages of the production chain, from the farm to the consumer's table. And it also highlights the need for, at this moment and in the coming decades, humanity to turn its efforts to the issue of food loss and waste.

Conab has already promoted other initiatives on this topic, such as the International Seminar on Losses in Grain Storage and Transport, held in November 2018, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). More recently, he also coordinated the seminar Mitigating Brazil's Storage Deficit, in May 2021, and the production of the book Losses in Transport and Storage of Grains: current panorama and perspectives, released in the same year. Regarding the analyzes in the current compendium, the full content in the archive can be accessed on the compendium page Conab studies.
