According to the 8th Survey of the 2021/2022 Grain Harvest, released on Thursday (12/05) by the National Supply Company (Conab), an increase in the sowing and production of rice and soybean crops was observed in the state of Maranhão.
During the crop evaluation period, throughout the month of April, information was updated on the planted area of dry rice, specifically favored in the municipality of São Mateus do Maranhão, which resulted in an increase in the total planted area of rice in the State , which reached 98,3 thousand ha, 6,2% above the area planted in the previous harvest.
The estimated production of 180,5 thousand tons increased by 15,1%. This result is related to the variables: increase in planted area and increase in crop productivity due to the use of rice varieties with greater productive potential.
According to the Company's study, in some regions it was possible to observe the spread and resumption of planting of this grain, which has been occurring gradually. This situation originates from the interest of rural producers as a result of the constant price increases achieved by the rice trade and also the good weather conditions observed in recent harvests.
In the State, the rainfed rice harvest, until April 2022, reaches around 56% of the total planted area, in the area with the greatest production of the grain, in the regions of Médio Mearim, in the center, in Baixada Maranhense, in the north , as well as in municipalities in the south, west and east of Maranhão.
In the Conab survey, it was also found that soybean crops had a significant increase of 11,1% in relation to the previous harvest, reaching 1.117,3 thousand ha. Area expansion is observed, especially in the micro-regions of Imperatriz and Pindaré, in the west of Maranhão, as well as in the central, southern and eastern regions of the State, corresponding to the gradual expansion of cultivation through the opening of new areas, either by replacing pastures or by opening new planting areas.
In April 2022, the soybean harvest reached 76% of the State's total area. The harvest is progressing in municipalities in the west, center and east of Maranhão, ending in June 2022.
