The weekend was marked by the occurrence of frosts in Paraná, including in areas further north of the State. As indicated in the new Weather and Cultivation Conditions bulletin from August 06th to 12th, prepared by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) and released today (13th), the rains that preceded the frosts were favorable for crops, which have suffered from the drought in recent months.
Coffee: Regarding coffee cultivation, the harvest is already in its final phase, and the harvested beans are in the process of drying and storing for sale.
Corn: As for corn crops, there are still some plots left to be harvested, and work has been partially interrupted due to the high humidity of the grains. In regions where rainfall helped development, some producers who had sown corn for ensiling ended up harvesting grain. In regions affected by drought, producers face difficulties in covering costs and sales remain slow.
Wheat: Most of the wheat is in flowering and fruiting, phases susceptible to losses due to excessive cold, but the crop should not suffer major impacts given the low intensity of frosts. However, producers remain on alert with the forecast of new events this week. Wheat harvests continued in the North and West, and have low productivity caused by the lack of adequate rain and the hot climate. In the South and Southwest, so far, the development of winter crops is within expectations.
The incidence of fungal diseases worries producers, as well as the increase in leaf spots and the strong pressure of powdery mildew on the stem and leaves in some plots. A resurgence of aphids has also been observed.
Barley: for barley, as well as for other winter crops, cultural treatments predominate in the field, such as the application of insecticides and fungicides.
Oats and ryegrass: In the South region, the production of oat and ryegrass silage, widely used to feed dairy cattle, has helped to maintain stable production during the winter.
Sugar cane: The sugar cane harvest continues at its normal pace, benefiting from the weather conditions.
Irrigated rice: Irrigated rice producers continue planting areas cultivated with pre-germinated rice.
Cassava: In cassava areas, the harvest continues and also the preparation of new planting areas.
Potato: The 2nd harvest potato crop continues to be harvested, with production within the estimated range.
Onion: The onion crop is showing excellent development and good prices, which has encouraged producers, who have invested in the application of inputs such as top dressing and irrigation. Last week, some producers were still concluding their implementation activities, with the transplantation of seedlings from the beds.
Banana: Dwarf banana prices continue to rise. One of the reasons for the appreciation is the reduction in supply in producing regions.
Strawberry: The strawberry harvest in warmer regions, which usually begins in June, began in August due to the atypical weather. High temperatures affected the development of the crop, which tends to have lower productivity than in previous years
Winter fruit trees: Due to this year's climate, with little cold, the buds of winter fruit trees sprouted early, and dormancy has already been broken with specific products on apple, peach and plum trees. These crops are at risk if there is heavy frost until early September.
