Coffee exports from Paraná generated US$ 195,7 million throughout the 1st half of 2024, around 26,7% more than the same period last year, when sales to the foreign market totaled US$ 154,5, XNUMX million. The result from January to June also represents the best performance of the Paraná product in the international markets in terms of revenue in the last twelve years.
The data is part of an analysis by the Paraná Institute for Economic and Social Development (Ipardes) based on data made available by the Foreign Trade Secretariat of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services.
Paraná's good commercial result was driven mainly by soluble coffee. It was responsible for US$ 149,7 million in sales, equivalent to 76,5% of export revenues in the 1st half of 2024, which also represented the fourth consecutive year of increase in revenues from this type of product, going from US $125 million in 2021 to $139 million in 2022 and $144 million in 2023 until reaching the current level.
The process of transforming green coffee beans into soluble coffee is carried out in factories and involves selection, roasting, grinding, extraction, concentration, different drying techniques and packaging the product in jars, sachets or cans ready for distribution.
In addition to meeting the demand of a different consumer profile, the production of soluble coffee brings economic benefits to the production chain by transforming the primary product into a consumer good with greater added value, increasing the producers' profit margin.
Due to the characteristics resulting from industrialization, soluble coffee allows export to more distant markets, where the logistics of transporting fresh coffee would be unfeasible, which contributes to the diversification of exports. While the coffee beans produced in Paraná are exported to 30 countries, soluble coffee already reaches 73 international destinations.
Germany represents the largest consumer market for coffee beans from Paraná, accounting for US$ 13,3 million in purchases between January and June this year, ahead of the Netherlands, with US$ 9 million, and the United States, with US$ 4,8 .30,3 million. In the case of soluble coffee, the USA is the main buyer, with US$13,9 million, followed by Poland (US$11,3 million) and Russia (US$XNUMX million).
According to the state secretary of Agriculture and Supply, Natalino Avance de Souza, Paraná has a history that guarantees it importance in the world of coffee and the appreciation of the product serves as a stimulus for the continuity of this culture. "Even though production has reduced compared to the beginning of the 60s, we currently have a product with very high added value, produced mainly on small properties, praised by the strong role of women in this culture and highlighted in the national and international market" , he stated.
The increase in the value of coffee following industrialization can also be noted when comparing the price in relation to weight. Paraná exported 12.479 tons of coffee beans for US$46 million, with revenue of US$3.689 per ton. In the same period, 16.349 tons of soluble coffee were sold abroad for US$149,7 million, or around US$9.153 per ton, 150% above the fresh product.
Industrialization is not restricted exclusively to coffee produced in the State, it also requires the purchase of green coffee from other states and countries for the production of soluble coffee in Paraná.
Through the Paraná Coffee Sector Chamber, which functions as a forum for the representation of economic agents in the coffee industry, the State Government is promoting the Paraná Coffee Quality Competition, which reaches its 22nd edition in 2024, aiming at constant improvement of the product collected in the State.
In addition to the competition, the State also supports initiatives aimed at rural tourism as an alternative form of income for producers and provides technical assistance through the Institute for Rural Development of Paraná (IDR-Paraná), especially within the “Women of Coffee” initiative. The project is not restricted to production, it also involves adding value in the direct sale of production to the public to increase producers' income.
The most recent estimate from the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) of the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Supply points to a production of 675 thousand bags of coffee (40,5 thousand tons) in an area of 25,3 thousand hectares until the end 2024 in Paraná. According to Deral, this year's harvest was marked by uniform flowering, which facilitates harvesting, and by increased prices, which compensates for part of the reduction in productivity due to drier weather and indicates a possible maintenance of the area destined for cultivation in the next harvest.
The Norte Pioneiro region is currently the largest producer in the State. The coffee is even from there that has the Geographical Indication seal, a recognition given to products that have a quality, reputation or distinct characteristics that are essentially attributed to their geographical origin. The municipality of Carlópolis alone represents 22% of state production, according to the Gross Production Value (VBP) of 2023.
