This week, the Campo Futuro Project raised the costs of producing grapes, sugar cane, corn, beef cattle farming, poultry farming, aquaculture and cotton in the states of Pernambuco, Sergipe, Goiás, Tocantins, Pará, Mato Grosso, Paraná , Santa Catarina, Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rondônia.

The surveys are carried out weekly by the Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Confederation (CNA) and have the support of state agricultural federations, rural producer unions and universities.

Check out the highlights for each culture:

Corn - The survey took place in Itabaiana (SE). The region presented climate variability and inconsistency, which harms production. Producers planned to harvest around 120 bags of corn per hectare, but due to dry weather or excessive rain, they estimate to consolidate the harvest at 100 (medium producer) and 80 bags per hectare (small producer) on average. With the increase in prices observed for fertilizers, producers reduced fertilization, but even so, fertilizer costs rose 64% for medium-sized producers and 105% for small-sized producers compared to the previous harvest. Spending on agricultural pesticides rose by 186% for medium producers and 485% for small producers.

Grape - The panel in Petrolina (PE) was based on a modal property for the region of 15 hectares, with 10 hectares cultivated with grapevines, with an average productivity of 30 tons/hectare, in a stand of 2.222 plants/hectare. The most planted variety is BRS Vitória, a seedless material. Sales are predominantly carried out via intermediaries using box containers. According to the survey, it was possible to observe a significant increase in costs during the period.

Sugar cane - Surveys carried out in Goiatuba and Quirinópolis (GO). Despite the greater production potential in relation to previous panels, the challenges imposed by the increase in input prices were reflected in the results. With the data collected, producers in both regions are managing to cover the Total Operating Cost (COT). Margins are positive, but revenue has not been sufficient to cover land and capital costs. In Goiatuba, inputs represented 54% of the Effective Operating Cost (COE). Fertilizer was the main item that weighed on rural producers’ pockets. In Quirinópolis, disbursements on inputs reached 47% of the COE.

Beef cattle - The meetings were with producers from Araguaína (TO), Santana do Araguaia (PA) and Barra do Garça (MT). In Araguaína, the survey was based on a modal cattle breeding and fattening property, with a total area of 2.146 hectares, of which 1,6 hectares are pasture area, and finishing 775 heads per year. The acquisition of animals was the item with the greatest weight in effective operating costs (COE), representing 66,17%, followed by mineral supplementation, with 17% of the COE.

In Santana do Araguaia, the model analyzed was a system of breeding and rearing on pasture and in areas of crop-livestock integration and finishing in confinement. The modal property considered was 4 thousand hectares, 1,5 thousand of which were exclusive pasture, with the sale of 1.380 finished cattle per year. The costs of inputs for agriculture in the integration areas had the greatest weight in the COE, representing 55,40%, followed by mineral supplementation and animal feed, with 17,67% of the COE.

In the municipality of Mato Grosso, the panel collected data on a cattle breeding and finishing modal property, with a total area of 1 thousand hectares, 700 hectares of which are pasture and finishing 343 heads per year. In this system, the acquisition of animals represented 70,07% of the COE, and mineral supplementation, 9,88%.

Layer poultry farming – Campo Futuro gathered information on the activity in Arapongas (PR), on a modal farm composed of two breeding sheds, eight rearing sheds and 33 laying sheds, in a conventional system. Production is 21,5 boxes with 30 dozen eggs per month. In relation to effective operating costs (COE), feed was the item with the greatest weight, representing 62,44%. Next came inputs for classification and packaging, with 15,81%, and hired labor, with 11,63% of the COE.

Shrimp farming – The production costs collected included the municipalities of Canavieiras (BA) and Florianópolis (SC). In the Bahian region, a typical property of 60 hectares was considered, with 8 hectares divided into 16 nurseries of 0,5 hectares. Regarding the distribution of costs, around 47% correspond to disbursements for feed and 33% are for electricity. The remaining expenses are distributed among items such as population, administrative costs, taxes, labor and fuel.

In Florianópolis, the panel had as a reference a fish farming area of 14 hectares of water depth on a property with a total area of 25 hectares. The component with the greatest weight in the formation of the COE was spending on feed, which in this case corresponded to 35%, followed by administrative expenses (19%), labor (19%) and energy (14%).

Cotton - The survey carried out in Chapadão do Sul (MS) evaluated the GlyTol LibertyLink (GL) GlyTol LibertyLink TwinLink Plus (GLT) and Bollgard II Roundup Ready Flex (B2RF) technologies, cultivated in the 2021/2022 harvest. The frosts frustrated the harvest expectations of cotton farmers who harvested 127, 146 and 153 arrobas of plume per hectare for the GL, GLT and B2RF technologies, respectively. Producers reported record input prices during the period. For fertilizers, the increase was 135% compared to the previous harvest.

Tambaqui – In Ariquemes (RO), the region's modal property has a fish farming area of 30 hectares of water depth (30% of the property's total area). The component with the greatest weight in the formation of the COE is the expenditure on feed, which in this case corresponded to more than 81%, an amount higher than the average observed in other regions. Next, administrative items and fry purchasing appear, with values above 5% of the COE each.
