Citrus growers from Minas Gerais have until January 15th to send a report on HLB (greening) to IMA
Procedure contributes to preventing the disease that affects oranges, lemons, tangerines and other citrus fruits
Every citrus producer in the state of São Paulo, whether owner, tenant or occupant in any capacity, must report by January 15, 2021 the results of inspections carried out in the orchard during the second half of 2020.
The information must be sent through the Animal and Plant Defense Management System (Gedave), of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply, linked to the Agricultural Defense Coordination, in www.gedave.sp.gov.br. At least two inspections must be carried out per semester, one in each quarter. Even in cases where no citrus plants with symptoms of greening and citrus canker are found, or if all citrus plants have been eliminated from the property, it is necessary to complete the report and send it, as this procedure is mandatory in accordance with current legislation. .
The canker and greening inspection report is an important phytosanitary document that proves the care that the producer takes with his citrus orchard. Among other documents, it must be presented to request the issuance of a statement on the use of controlled burning and is one of the prerequisites for registering and maintaining the property in the Risk Mitigation System (SMR) for citrus canker, which makes commercialization viable. of fruits to other states.
Failure to report inspections subjects the producer to fines ranging from 100 to 500 tax units from the state of São Paulo (Ufesp). The value of Ufesp in 2021 is R$29,09.
There is still no curative treatment or resistant variety for greening. When contaminated, young plants fail to produce and adult plants become unproductive within two to five years. The only way to control the disease is through constant inspections, which must be carried out by the citrus grower. If plants with symptoms of the disease are found, they must be eliminated as quickly as possible to eliminate the sources of inoculum, associated with the control of the disease vector, which is the psyllid (Diaphorina citri). The disease is caused by the bacteria Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri that attacks all varieties and species of citrus, causes lesions on leaves, fruits and branches and, when in high incidence, causes defoliation and fruit fall. With the publication of Resolution SAA 10, of February 20, 2017, the state of São Paulo was made official as an area under the Risk Mitigation System for citrus canker, which enabled the adoption of phytosanitary measures, with the aim of reducing the pest inoculum, maintain an appropriate level of protection against the disease and enable the commercialization of fruit without symptoms, which can facilitate the commercialization of fruit in both the domestic and international markets.
