Cinnamaldehyde (cinnamaldehyde) was incorporated into the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC) modes of action (MOA) poster in version 2023. It appears in a new subclass, which received the code BM 03, reserved for metabolites purified from plant or microbial sources, or synthetic versions of these metabolites.

Cinnamaldehyde acts to inhibit beta (1,3) glucan synthase and chitin synthase and consequent cell wall biosynthesis, rupture of membranes and membrane function, destruction of mitochondria and interruption of oxidative processes.

According to scientific literature, cinnamaldehyde is a natural compound isolated from the bark of trees of the genus cinnamomum sp., used in various situations. It has antibacterial, antifungal, nematicidal and insecticidal properties, among others.

As examples of its use, see the patents listed below:

• UPL (IN202021041481) - aqueous emulsion comprising cinnamaldehyde, a process for preparation and a method of use as a fungicide.

• Gyeongsang University Industry (KR1020160104262) - composition including cinnamon oil, benzaldehyde or cinnamaldehyde as active ingredient to control bacteria Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli (causing, for example, melon water spot).

• Kimitec Biogroup (US20220354128) - biopesticide composition pests belonging to the whitefly group.

• Agricultural and Mining Development (WO2020216969) - composition comprising cinnamaldehyde and terpene alcohol as nematicide in phytosanitary treatment in crops such as bananas, grapes, fruit trees, citrus plants, strawberries and soybeans.
