CEBDS takes proposals from the Brazilian business sector to the UN meeting on biodiversity

Meeting in Switzerland with 196 countries will discuss the new Biodiversity Framework, which will define goals to reduce damage to nature caused by human activity

From Monday, the 14th, the CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development) will be in Geneva, Switzerland, to take proposals from the Brazilian business sector on the new Biodiversity Framework. It is there that the preparatory meeting for the new global agreement on nature conservation will be held, with the presence of negotiators from 196 countries.

CEBDS, which represents 85 companies and around 50% of the national GDP, will participate directly in meetings where international negotiations take place and will hold bilateral meetings with the Brazilian government, in addition to events with international partners. The Council has been working in recent years directly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to build the Brazilian position, reinforcing the importance of the business sector as a solution for sustainable development.

Brazilian companies are committed to playing a leadership role in and for the conservation of biodiversity through actions, projects and initiatives that aim to comply with laws and internal voluntary goals and that will contribute to achieving global goals.

Among the main actions, the Council will highlight the importance of ending illegal deforestation and reversing the loss of natural areas, favoring the sustainable use of natural resources.

“Brazil is highly dependent on ecosystem services and biodiversity for a significant part of its GDP, and has vast business opportunities in a nature-based economy”, argues Henrique Luz (photo below), technical coordinator and leader of the Thematic Chamber of Biodiversity at CEBDS.

“The proposals from the business sector will encourage businesses to generate positive impacts on nature. By collaborating in the definition of goals and metrics for the operation and prioritizing investments in sustainable solutions, companies want to promote, in the short term, a new development model, based on a green economy, which generates jobs and income in a sustainable way.”
