Most canola crops are in the flowering stage, presenting a pleasant visual aspect to the agricultural landscape in the growing regions. Emater/RS projects 134.975 hectares cultivated in the state, and the initial productivity is 1.679 kg/ha.

According to the Informative Report produced and released today (5/9) by the Planning Department, crops sown from June onwards show plant populations within the desired standards, high vigor, adequate health and satisfactory development, in addition to expectations of good productivity. The damage caused by the frosts on August 25 and 26 was considered punctual and of low impact.

Most crops are in good health, especially with regard to white mold, although aphids and diamondback moths have been observed in some areas. The earliest crops, sown in April and May, have lower plant density and yield potential below initial projections due to untimely rainfall during germination.

Most wheat crops are in the final stages of vegetative development, covering 56% of the crops; 30% are in flowering; and 14% are in grain formation. During this period, the crop was favored by increased solar radiation, combined with conditions of low humidity and cold or moderate temperatures, which increased the accumulation of biomass. The cultivated area, according to data from Emater/RS, is 1.312.488 hectares, and the expected productivity is 3.100 kg/ha.

The development of white oat is satisfactory, although there is considerable variability in the production potential in the different regions of the State. In the crops most affected by diseases, senescence of the basal leaves was observed, which caused a reduction in the green leaf mass, but without compromising the flag leaves. Emater/RS estimates the cultivated area for grain production at 365.590 hectares, and productivity at 2.402 kg/ha.

In general, the development condition of crops barley is satisfactory. The plants have expanded their leaf area, and the areas sown at the beginning of the planting window are in the ear emission and flowering stages. The crop projection is 34.429 hectares, and the productivity is 3.245 kg/ha.

O corn is in the sowing phase. The process is more advanced in the northwest quadrant of the state, particularly in areas close to the Uruguay River, where microclimatic characteristics reduce the risk of late frosts. In the rest of the state, most areas are being prepared and sowing is still in its infancy. The planting pace varies according to soil moisture conditions and the forecast for rising temperatures. For the 2024/2025 harvest, Emater/RS projects the cultivation of 748.511 hectares, and productivity is estimated at 7.116 kg/ha.

O corn silage is being implemented. Area preparation and sowing activities have intensified, varying according to soil moisture conditions. Despite the small expectation of a reduction in the state's cultivated area, in most producing regions, the area is stable in relation to the last harvest due to the food demand of the dairy herd. 357.311 hectares of cultivated area for silage are expected in the 2024/2025 Harvest. The estimated productivity is 38.440 kg/ha.

Vegetable crops

In the Santa Rosa region, the production of leafy vegetables continued to be good, especially in commercial systems using hydroponics. The increased production of leafy vegetables in recent days has ensured that a large part of the demand in the local market is met, and producers have already reduced prices to ensure the flow of production and avoid losses.

As spring approaches, producers are planting seeds to advance the cultivation of cucurbits and other summer plants and thus ensure an early harvest for commercialization, as well as reducing the incidence of insects, diseases and metabolic disorders that are characteristic of the hot summer climate. Pea harvesting has also been intensified, and the legume is being sold directly to consumers, which represents a good source of income for producers with small production areas.

Fruit growing

In the administrative region of Emater/RS in Caxias do Sul, extension agents carried out Proagro inspections in the areas most affected by the storms in May. Laranja continues to show granulation or crystallization disorders. In part, this situation is due to the leaching of nutrients from the soil due to the rains that occurred in September and November 2023, as well as in May 2024.

The orange groves are full of flowers. The bergamot harvest is accelerating as the Montenegrina ripens. Many are using organic or conventional products to keep their plants healthy. Other practices carried out by citrus growers include removing branches from the lower part of the plant and cleaning the inside to improve sunlight and ventilation.
