Arabica coffee from the municipality of São Sebastião da Grama (SP) is the country's newest Geographical Indication (GI) in the Indication of Origin category. With this recognition, granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), Brazil reaches its 124th Brazilian GI and the 17th related to coffee.

The region's product has striking citrus characteristics, maintaining balance and flavor through a process of cultivation at high altitudes and slow maturation. Vale da Grama is home to around 300 producers in a production area of 6.700 hectares, with an average production of 154 bags per month.

“This is a great achievement for Vale da Grama and will increase the participation of controlled origins in national coffee production. The Geographical Indication will add value to the product and protect the planting culture of the producing region,” says Hulda Giesbrecht, coordinator of Future-Producing Technologies at Sebrae.

The registration of a Geographical Indication certifies that a given product or service has special qualities due to its geographical origin. With GIs, products are more valued and the producing regions can benefit collectively.

Traceability platform

To track products with Geographical Indication (GI) in this segment, there is the Controlled Origin Coffee platform. This system gathers and monitors data on 15 Brazilian coffee GIs, meeting the needs of more than 100 producers spread across 424 municipalities. Using this tool, they are better able to sell their products domestically and to the international market.
