Harvest Guarantee benefit will be R$1,2 in the 2022/2023 harvest

The benefit paid by the Garantia-Harvest program will increase from R$850 to R$1,2 from the 2022/2023 Harvest. The amount is paid to family farmers who live in the semi-arid region of Minas Gerais, in the event of crop loss due to drought or excessive rainfall.  

The Garantia-Safra is an action of the federal government, which has the support of the Government of Minas, to grant financial benefits. The adjustment, of 41%, was decided by the Harvest Guarantee Fund Management Committee, and had the favorable vote of the State Government. In the 2020/2021 harvest, the State made a contribution of 4,1 million, covering 88 municipalities and 28.137 family farmers, who demonstrated crop losses.

Family farmers in the semi-arid region of Minas Gerais interested in joining the program and being entitled to the benefit in the next harvest should contact the Emater-MG office in their municipality to register by October 31st. 

In Minas Gerais, the program is developed in the area of ​​operation of the Northeast Development Superintendency (Sudene), which covers 168 municipalities in the north of the state, where producers suffer systematic losses due to climatic difficulties. 

Beneficiaries must have a monthly income of up to one and a half minimum wages, and produce beans, rice, cassava, cotton and corn. Production loss equal to or greater than 50% in the region's harvest must be proven. 

“The program is essential to guarantee a minimum income for family farmers who find themselves in a vulnerable situation during times of crop loss”, says the director of Family Agriculture at the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Fabrícia Mateus Lopes. 

The director recalls that the benefit is a way of cushioning the impacts of damage, in addition to guaranteeing families minimum survival conditions. “This resource is mainly used to replace the costs of agricultural activities, purchasing food for the family and farm animals”, she states. 

Values 

In practice, the Union, States and Municipalities, in addition to the farmer himself, pay a share so that, in the event of a crop loss, the producer is reimbursed and can have their social risk reduced. With the approval of the adjustment, the new values ​​to be contributed to the fund by all parties participating in the program are defined.  

The contribution of the family farmer who joins the program is now R$24. Municipalities will pay R$72 per farmer who joins in their jurisdiction and the States will contribute R$144 per farmer who is part of the program. The Federal Government contributes at least R$480 of the annual forecast of total benefits. The supplementation is the responsibility of resources available in the Garantia-Safra fund.
