Lack of researchers paralyzes research at IAC
Entities and leaders spoke out in favor of preserving the institute's research areas
In November, the first bean harvest for 2024/25 was reassessed to 167,5 thousand hectares, 55% more compared to the first harvest of the previous cycle, which was 107,8 thousand hectares.
The data are part of the Subjective Harvest Forecast (PSS) released today by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), of the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply. The document also estimates that the total production of summer crops for the 2024/25 harvest will reach 25,4 million tons.
The Southwest region was responsible for a large part of this increase, which normally stands out in the second harvest, but this year, more than tripled the bean production area in the first harvest, going from 10,2 thousand hectares to 32,9 thousand.
Although the Southwest region has seen the greatest increase in cultivated area, the South region still accounts for the majority of the area used for the crop. There, beans currently cover 122,4 thousand hectares, representing 73% of the cultivated area.
The crop is developing well, with 95% of the area in good condition, but the excessive heat of the last few days is causing concern among producers.
Harvesting is expected to begin soon, as 4% of the planted area is already ripe. Deral agronomist Carlos Hugo Godinho explains that production expectations for the season are high. “If weather conditions continue to be favorable, we can harvest a large crop, which could reach nearly 320 tons. And if it is harvested at this level, it will be practically double the harvest we harvested last year, when we suffered losses, especially due to the high cloud cover in the fields,” he stated.
As for the 2024 winter grain harvest, which recently ended, total production was 3 million tons. The numbers were 31% lower than the previous harvest, when 4,4 million tons were recorded. The drought affected wheat production, the main crop of the period. On the other hand, barley production recovered, especially in terms of quality.
Planting of the first 2024/25 soybean crop has come to an end. Crop conditions have worsened in the last week, especially due to irregular weather conditions in some regions, with 92% of the area considered to be in good condition, compared to 99% the previous week.
Regarding corn, planting has also ended and conditions are good for most of the area. 156 thousand hectares of the crop were planted and production is expected to reach 2,6 million tons.
The first potato crop for 2024/25 is 100% planted and 6% harvested, with an estimated production of 522 thousand tons, 33% more than the previous cycle.
Regarding onions, there was a 29% increase in the harvest due to weather conditions. From 10% in October to 39% in November. The area exceeded the previous year's production by almost 40%, which was reflected in the price.
Deral also released today the Weekly Agricultural Situation Bulletin. In addition to reports on the conditions of the grain harvest in Paraná, the document presents information on the price of beef cattle, which on November 26 reached R$ 352,00, accumulating an increase of 10,48% in the month, according to Cepea. It also brings data on the international trade of pig leather and skin for use in the manufactured goods industry.
Finally, the Bulletin provides an overview of the sale of nuts and chestnuts, typical products for the end-of-year festivities. In 2024, up to October, they represent the third item in the amounts spent on imports of Brazilian fruit, with a total of US$ 118,1 million for the acquisition of 20,7 thousand tons, according to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
