Avocado production grows in Paraná

In nine years, avocado production in Paraná has increased by 9% in area and 91% in harvests. This is one of the topics covered in the Agricultural Situation Bulletin, published by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), part of the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply (Seab).

In 2014, production was 22,2 thousand tons planted in an area of ​​just over a thousand hectares, generating a Gross Production Value (VBP) of R$ 55,6 million.

Production in 2023 reached 35,8 tons on an area of ​​2 hectares, generating a gross domestic product (GVP) of R$89,7 million. This represented 2,6% of the state's fruit production. Surveys for 2024 already indicate an increase in avocado production in Paraná, which will be confirmed when official figures are released later this month.

The northern part of the state stands out in terms of production, with the municipality of Apucarana being the largest producer of the fruit in the state, accounting for 88,1% of the state's production. Arapongas and Assaí remain the second and third largest producers, accounting for 7,3% and 6,7% of the state's production, respectively.

Deral agricultural engineer Paulo Andrade, a fruit analyst, explains the reason for the increase in fruit production. "The fruit, once seen as harmful to nutritional issues, is now proven to be a functional superfood, contributing to improvements in public health."

Paulo explains that Brazilian fruit exports have also been growing steadily. "Brazil is currently the seventh-largest producer in the world, accounting for 4% of total production. Of the fruits exported by Brazil, it ranks eighth in volume, representing revenues of US$36 million for shipments of 24 tons," he says. This means Brazil continues to achieve successive records in the Brazilian trade balance.

corn and soy 

According to Conab, the national harvest of major grains could be the largest in history, exceeding 345 million tons. In this context, soybeans and corn represent 89% of the total.

Paraná accounts for 13% of national production, contributing approximately 45 million tons. The state's first corn and soybean harvest is already complete, and the second corn harvest is over 86% complete.

Coffee 

Last week, prices received by producers for a bag of processed coffee averaged R$1.683,97. Prices fell in the first weeks of August but have recovered in recent days.

The expectation is a production of 44,5 thousand tons in Paraná, 10% more than in 2024, which was 40,3 thousand, and it should also present higher quality, even with the climate problems.
