Between January and September 2021, the average price of a bag of soybeans in Mato Grosso do Sul reached R$155,45, a value 60% higher than that recorded in the same period of the previous year. According to the Technical Department of the Famasul System, this upward movement has been a reality since the second half of 2019, which has been intensifying in the last two years.

“The 2021/2022 harvest begins in an environment where the main indicators that guide the evolution and results of the harvest operate in a mixed field, but with a predominance of positive fundamentals”, explains economist Eliamar Oliveira, technical analyst at the institution.

The average bag recorded in September this year was R$159,01, which corresponds to 13,77% more than the same month in 2020, when the value was R$139,77. And the expectation for 2022 is that the environment will remain conducive to maintaining high prices, although with appreciations not as significant as observed in 2021.

The factors that justify the appreciation will continue to be present: rising commodity prices on the foreign market, a valued dollar with a price of around R$5,20 in 2021 and 2022 and heated demand evidenced in Conab's projections, which predict an 11% increase in crushing and 5% growth in Brazilian oilseed exports in 2022.

According to the economist, this scenario justifies the estimated area increase for the 2021/2022 Brazilian soybean harvest by 3,6%, from 38,53 million hectares to 39,91 million in the next harvest, and will be a stimulus so that the producer from Mato Grosso do Sul expands areas.

For the technical manager, José Pádua, the increase in production costs is worrying, but the rural producer is prepared for the challenges. “Producers have already adopted strategies for acquiring inputs through advance purchase and cash payment, and should seek productivity gains that allow them to dilute the cost, guarantee profitability and minimize the effects of this increase”, he states.

“The growth in productivity and production will only be interrupted if there is adverse weather conditions with irregular rains that delay the planting of the crop and harm the development of the crop”, he adds.
