On the date that celebrates one year of commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Global Compact and the Science-Based Targets initiative, Alltech released its 2020 Sustainability Report. of the company that aims for a planet of abundance is the “Print less, plant more” campaign, carried out in Brazil, which has already reduced the use of paper by 38% in its units in the country and, for 2021, seeks the target of 50%.
According to Alltech's business and technology manager for Latin America, Bruno Souza, planning for the action began in 2019, with processes to identify the amount of paper used in offices, which despite already being sourced from reforestation wood, can be used even more consciously. “Today we are able to quantify the use of paper in each sector and the equivalent in trees and CO production2 involved in paper production. The idea is that every employee and manager can take action to reduce the use of paper,” he says.
Another focus of the campaign was the planting of one hundred seedlings of native trees such as ipê, pau-brasil, peroba, jacarandá and six other species for reforestation in the rural area of São Pedro do Ivaí (PR), where Alltech has a manufacturing unit. The action was carried out in a region with river sources, contributing to their preservation.
As part of the commitment signed last year with the UN, Alltech is specifically focused on nine of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which the company believes it can significantly impact due to their alignment with its core businesses. They are: Zero Hunger and Sustainable Agriculture, Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Action Against Global Climate Change, Life in Water, Life on Land and Partnerships and Means of Implementation.
Furthermore, it is also aligned with the UN Global Compact (UNGC) and Science-Based Goals. For the president and CEO of Alltech, Mark Lyons, as it is a company that covers the entire food supply chain, it is possible to positively impact a variety of sectors. “The UN Global Compact has helped to direct, value and align existing projects and to design future initiatives. The pages of this report reflect our call to consumers and partners to join us in a collaborative effort to adopt new technologies, improve business practices and embrace innovation, to create a world of abundance”, he highlights.
The 2020 Sustainability Report Still Reflects the Alltech Vision Planet of Plenty, which aims to call on different sectors to work together for a planet of abundance. Within this, actions include Carbon Trust validation, education initiatives, support for women in agribusiness and the application of 40 years of research in animal nutrition to advance human health.
“We are excited to reach this milestone on a journey that began in 1980,” said co-founder and Director of Institutional Image and Design at Alltech, Deirdre Lyons. “Our mission is guided by principles that benefit animals, consumers and the environment – to make a difference in the world around us – and has a new resolve for success that will guide us into the future,” she concludes.
