The American company Albaugh and Fundecitrus – Citrus Defense Fund announce the formation of a partnership to promote the sustainable protection of citrus crops and technological innovation in orchards. Under the agreement, Albaugh will also be part of the group known as 'Citrus Friendly Companies', a Fundecitrus initiative created to bring together companies linked to the citrus chain that support sustainable actions to control pests and diseases.

“We recognize the importance of Fundecitrus and identify with its purpose. I am sure that together we will generate more knowledge and training for professionals in the citrus industry”, highlights Albaugh's director of marketing and development, José Geraldo Martins dos Santos. He adds that the company has a broad portfolio of solutions for the citrus production chain, such as Recop fungicide, and has achieved a leading position in the post-patent solutions market. “Albaugh delivers a value proposition anchored in cutting-edge technologies and the best cost-benefit ratio for the producer.”

A private association, with no economic purposes, Fundecitrus was founded in 1977, by citrus growers and juice industries from São Paulo, with the aim of promoting the sustainable development of citrus growing activities. Today, it has around 130 employees and maintains more than 80 lines of research in progress, in addition to around 40 global partnerships. Currently, the entity's operations also cover the Triângulo and Southwest regions of Minas Gerais. According to Fundecitrus, producers maintain approximately 460 thousand hectares of citrus productive area in SP and MG, the main orange and orange juice producing region in the world.

According to the entity's website, Fundecitrus recently launched the Sustainable Citriculture initiative, made up of a series of measures with an emphasis on good agricultural practices, the development of new technologies and digital tools. The entity seeks to encourage, throughout the production chain, sustainability in the control of citrus pests and diseases, in addition to the productivity of orchards and safety at work, among other advances.

Last week, the Reference Unit of the Engineering and Automation Center (CEA), of the Agronomic Institute (IAC), an entity of the Department of Agriculture and Supply of the State of SP, released a study carried out in partnership with Fundecitrus. The survey shows that, in two decades, there was a significant reduction in water consumption when spraying agrochemicals in orchards. According to the study, the average volume of water used in agrochemical mixtures, which was 10 liters to 12 liters per hectare in 2000, dropped to between 2 liters and 4 liters per hectare. This saving, the researchers reported, is equivalent to enough water to supply 200 million Brazilians for one day.
