Agro makes Porto de Santos record new records

The Port of Santos handled 15,3 million tons of goods in July, recording the best mark for that month and 5,2% above the figure recorded in July last year (14,5 million tons). This performance increased the accumulated movement for the year by 0,8%, which totals 96,3 million tons, also a record for the period.

Once again, agribusiness cargo leads the growth, with soybeans standing out, with 2,1 million tons in July (+65,7%) and 26,7 million tons in the year to date (+16,3% ); followed by sugar, with 2,2 million tons in the month (+4,9%) and 10,4 million tons in the first 7 months of the year (+4,9%).

The volume of corn shipped in the year totals 4,3 million tons, an increase of 3,7%. The expectation is that these shipments will grow even more, given the arrival of the second harvest of this commodity in this second half of the year.

The president of the Santos Port Authority (APS), Anderson Pomini, reveals that the forecast is to end the year with 18,8 million tons of corn shipped, 28,4 million tons of soybeans and 21,4 million tons of sugar .

“The corn flow cycle at the Port of Santos is from July to December, interspersed with the soybean harvest (1st semester)”, explains Pomini. And he adds: “the infrastructure for serving agricultural crops is expanding in the Santos port complex. Multinational food players have been making investments in the Port's capacity to handle grains and the latest of them was Cofco, with STS11, which already has expansion works underway and will be the largest terminal for bulk vegetables in the country”.

The Port of Santos transported 27,2% of national corn exports, from January to July, and 36,1% of soybean exports.

Overall, shipments reached 11,6 million tons in the month, an increase of 8,6%, and in the year to date, 71,7 million tons, 2,9% above the same period in 2022. Discharges totaled 3,7 million tons, 5,2% below the figure recorded in July of the previous year. The accumulated result for the year reached 24,5 million tons, also showing a reduction of 4,8%.

Also noteworthy were shipments of liquid bulk, such as citrus juice, with monthly growth of 16,1% and accumulated growth in the year of 8,3%; and alcohol, in the month 111,7% and in the first 7 months of the year 35,1%.

The movement of containerized cargo totaled 420,3 thousand TEU (unit equivalent to a 20-foot container), remaining 4,6% below July last year (440,6 thousand TEU), despite being characterized as the second largest monthly movement in Porto for this modality. The accumulated result for the year remains 6,5% below the same previous period, totaling 2,6 million TEU.

Solid bulk reached 52,8 million tons in the year, a growth of 7% and liquid bulk reached 10,8 million tons, 1,5% less than the same period of the previous year.

Ship berthing in the first 7 months of the year reached 3.125 vessels, growth of 3,8%.
