Agristar launches Garra tomato, a hybrid product from the Topseed Premium line

The high rainfall and high summer temperatures are challenges that tomato producers face in their day-to-day operations. Considering this, Agristar do Brasil launched the Garra tomato, a hybrid product from the Topseed Premium line, which was developed with the highest technology after many tests and studies.

The Garra tomato was the major launch presented during Open Field Day 2021, which is Agristar's traditional Field Day. “The Garra tomato is our highlight this year. It is a material that will have a very prosperous future in our product portfolio”, explains Agristar’s Tomatoes and Peppers specialist, Thiago Teodoro.

The main characteristic of the material is its adaptation to planting in the rainiest seasons, due to its health and leaf coverage. Other points that also draw attention are the size of the fruits and the double resistance to Geminivirus (TYLCV) and Vira-Cabeça (TSWV). “The Garra tomato has an average cycle of 110 days and brings a lot of security to the farmer, especially in adverse planting conditions, such as intense rainy periods. Furthermore, the leaf cover helps protect the fruits against diseases and cracks”, details Teodoro.

Other advantages of the Garra tomato for the producer are related to the good size and uniformity of the fruits on the bunch itself, providing the high 2A classification. Furthermore, the fruits have an intense red color and excellent quality.

The good firmness of the tomato offers exceptional post-harvest, providing greater fruit security to the farmer when shipping the product to more distant regions. “Firmness, for us and for producers, is a basic but very important requirement for this tomato, as we are in a country with continental dimensions and it is necessary to guarantee the safety of transporting products in these conditions”, highlights Thiago Teodoro.

According to the Agristar specialist, the main markets for planting Garra tomatoes are the Southeast and Central-West regions, due to the adaptability to the summer climate in these areas. “We always seek quality thinking about the entire chain, including the wholesaler and the end consumer”, he adds.
