European Union Court of Justice rules on case involving neonicotinoids
The assessment concerns the possibility for member states to establish temporary authorizations for pesticides
Agriculture closed 2022 with record exports of US$159,1 billion, growth of 32% compared to 2021, according to data from the Federal Government compiled by the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) in the Agribusiness Foreign Trade Bulletin. The sector also generated the largest surplus ever recorded in history, at US$141,8 billion.
Soybeans led foreign sales last year, with revenue of US$46,6 billion, 20,8% more than 2021. In second place was corn, which had the greatest variation among exported items (196,6. 12,1%), reaching US$ 11,8 billion. Completing the list of the top five are fresh beef (US$ 10,3 billion), soybean meal (US$ 9,5 billion) and raw cane sugar (US$ XNUMX billion).
According to CNA, China was the main destination for Brazilian agricultural exports, accounting for 31,9% of shipments, totaling US$50,8 billion. The European Union, the second main destination, accounted for 16,1%, and the United States came in third place, with a share of 6,6%. The other main destinations were: Iran (2,7%); Japan (2,7%); Thailand (2,0%); South Korea (2,0%); Vietnam (2,0%); India (1,9%); and Indonesia (1,9%).
Still in the period from January to December 2022, the biggest increases recorded in Brazilian agricultural exports were to India, with an increase of 128,3%, Iran (121,7%) and Japan (66,3%).
CNA also analyzed exports from sectors monitored within the Agro.BR Project, an initiative carried out with Apex-Brasil to increase the supply of Brazilian agricultural products in foreign trade and promote the diversification of the Brazilian export basket. In 2022, coffee was the most exported product, with revenues of US$9,2 billion, an increase of 45% compared to the previous year.
Another sector that saw an increase last year was fish, up 1,9% (compared to 2021) with foreign sales generating revenue of US$374,9 million. Fruits, cocoa and bee products fell in 2022 compared to the previous year.
In monthly terms, exports totaled US$ 11,3 billion in December, growth of 15,4%, compared to December/2021. The result was driven by corn exports, which rose 146% compared to the same period in 2021 and reached US$ 1,8 billion. Following are soybeans in grains (US$ 1,2 billion), raw cane sugar (US$ 785,1 million), fresh beef (US$ 756,4 million) and chicken meat (US$ 733,4 .XNUMX million).
China was the main market for Brazilian agricultural products in December, with a 24,2% share of shipments. The European Union accounted for 16,7%, followed by the United States (7,1%). Completing the list of main destinations: Japan (3,4%); India (3,2%); South Korea (2,7%); Iran (2,7%); Saudi Arabia (2,3%); Vietnam (2,2%); and Russia (2,1%).
