The Brazilian Association of Seed Technology (ABRATES) and the Seed Analysis Laboratory of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) are holding the XV Theoretical-Practical Training Course on Seed Analysis of Major Crops, between the 08th and 12th of November 2021, in Lavras (MG). Registration is now open and can be done on the ABRATES website - www.abrates.org.br.

Aimed at students, professionals and enthusiasts of the Brazilian seed industry, the course aims to provide participants with training to assess the quality of seeds from large crops.

Topics such as standards for seed production and marketing, botanical bases for seed testing, sampling principles, purity testing, quality determination through germination and vigor tests will be covered.

"The course brings improvements in teachings related to the analysis of seeds from large crops, in accordance with the official methodologies described in the Rules for Seed Analysis, further training professionals for the job market", says Raquel Maria de Oliveira Pires, professor from UFLA and coordinator of the Course.

Classes will be taught by UFLA professors Raquel Maria de Oliveira Pires, Everson Reis Carvalho and Heloisa Oliveira dos Santos and retired professors and creators of the course Maria Laene Moreira de Carvalho and João Almir Oliveira, in addition to researcher Dayliane Bernardes de Andrade and by the tax auditor of the Ministry of Agriculture and Supply, Myriam Alvisi.

The coordinator highlights that for the seed to be commercialized, it has to go through a process of verifying its quality, with commitment to the analyzes and methodologies described for this purpose being essential. "It is a market requirement that the seed has its quality checked, within the laboratory", explains Raquel.

"The success of a crop depends on the use of quality seeds, which generate plants with high vigor and superior performance in the field, which is why the work of the seed analyst is so important. He brings with him the responsibility of assessing whether the seeds sold in the country they are in fact of quality, since the quality itself is established in the field", says Raquel.

"The laboratory analyst is responsible for all these evaluations and, based on the tests, indicates whether the seed can be commercialized", says professor Maria Laene Moreira de Carvalho, adding that all this work is essential to give rise to a new plant with characteristics and vigor.

"It's not enough to just germinate, the plant has to germinate well and produce a vigorous seedling", adds Maria Laene.
