World coffee production reaches 168,2 million 60kg bags

In the 2022-2023 coffee year, global coffee production including both species of Coffea arabica e Coffea canephora the total physical volume equivalent to 168,2 million 60kg bags was reached, a performance that represents a slight increase of 0,1% compared to the same previous period. This volume was determined and computed by adding the harvests of the countries that make up the four major producing regions of the planet: South America, Mexico & Central America, Africa, and Asia & Oceania.

The highlight was the total coffee harvest in South America, the largest producing region on the planet, which reached a volume of 81,3 million 60kg bags, which corresponds to 48,3% of the world harvest. Next, Asia & Oceania stands out, whose production totaled 49,8 million bags (29,6%), followed by third place, Central America & Mexico, with 19,2 million bags (11,4%) . And, finally, in fourth place comes Africa, which produced the equivalent of 17,9 million 60kg bags, which represent 10,7% of what was produced worldwide, in the 2022-2023 coffee year.

The total production of C. arabica coffee species, worldwide, in the same period now highlighted, reached the sum of 94 million 60kg bags, a volume that corresponds to 55,9% of the world harvest. And, additionally, that the harvest of C. canephora (Robusta+conilon), which was 74,2 million bags, represents approximately 44,1% of the total coffee production in the four major regions of the planet mentioned above.

The  International Coffee Organization – ICO  considers and groups, in its relevant reports and studies, the four major coffee producing regions mentioned, namely: Asia & Oceania, Mexico & Central America, Africa and South America. Even though the year- coffee production of the Organization, at a global level, covers the period between the months of October and September.

If a simple comparison of the volume of the harvested crop (168,2 million bags) is established with the total consumed worldwide, based on official ICO data contained in the highlighted report, it is clear that coffee consumption recorded in the same year -coffee crop 2022-2023, reaching a total of 173,1 million 60kg bags, surpassed supply by approximately 2,9%, additional demand that was obviously met with stocks from previous harvests.

The coffee exporting countries of the two species mentioned, despite systematically supplying the planet with their product, also consumed the equivalent of 55,1 million 60kg bags in the coffee year in question, a consumption that is equivalent to 31,8 % of the world. While coffee importing and consuming countries acquired in physical volume the equivalent of 118,1 million 60kg bags, they demand that it represented around 68,2% of what was consumed in the world in that coffee year. 2022-2023.
