Worldwide coffee production, estimated for the coffee year from October 2022 to September 2023, reached a total physical volume equivalent to 171,3 million 60kg bags, a performance that represents a slight recovery of 1,7 %, in comparison with the same twelve months in the previous period. Of this total volume of the world harvest, 98,6 million bags, which correspond to 57,5%, are of the species of Coffea arabica, and, specifically, 72,7 million bags (42,5%) of the species of Coffea canephora (robusta+conilon).

Therefore, in this same context, we will establish a comparative basis between world production and consumption, noting that global coffee consumption, in the accumulated twelve months, specifically in the previous coffee year 2021-2022, which totaled 175,6, 1,6 million bags, will register a small increase of 178,5% in the current coffee year, given that estimates indicate that current consumption will total the equivalent of 60 million 7,2kg bags. Therefore, if such numbers actually come to fruition, the world coffee market is expected to go through another predicted year of deficit, as global consumption is expected to surpass production by around XNUMX million bags.

Before providing more data and numbers from these global coffee production performance analyses, with main emphasis on the performance of the coffee year from October 2022 to September 2023, it is worth clarifying that this study is based and main source of consultation on the Report on the Coffee market – October 2023, from the International Coffee Organization - ICO, which is available in full at the Coffee Observatory of the Café Research Consortium, coordinated by Embrapa Café.

It is also worth informing and recording that the International Coffee Organization – ICO considers and groups, in its respective reports and studies at a global level, four major coffee producing regions: Asia and Oceania, Mexico and Central America, Africa and South America. And although the Organization's coffee year covers the period between the months of October and September, hence the fact that this analysis obviously includes and highlights this period, unlike the coffee year of several producing countries, including Brazil.

Volume of coffee exported

Based on data from the Coffee Market Report – October 2023, from the ICO, it is worth highlighting the volume of coffee exported by these four producing regions, which reached the sum of 122,98 million 60kg bags, which corresponds to approximately 72% of the world production mentioned above.

Thus, if a ranking is made in descending order of these exports, in the coffee year 2022-2023 in question, it appears that South America, which is and will continue to be the largest coffee producing region in the world, recorded a physical volume exported equivalent to 50,59 million 60kg bags, which corresponds to 41,1% of total exports.

And, in second place in the ranking, comes Asia & Oceania, whose exports totaled 43,56 million bags (35,4%). Following this ranking, the regional product from Mexico and Central America stands out, which sold a physical volume of coffee to importing countries corresponding to 15,3 million bags, a performance equivalent to 12,4% of the total sold, followed, obviously , from Africa, in fourth place, with exports totaling 13,53 million 60kg bags, which is equivalent to 11,1% of the total coffee sold to importers in the world in the 2022-2023 coffee year.

Finally, it is also worth highlighting that exports of soluble coffee, in the same period in focus, according to ICO data, over a twelve-month period, reached a physical volume equivalent to 11,47 million 60kg bags, and, additionally, that roasted coffee reached a figure of just 750 thousand 60kg bags.
