World coffee production in the 2019-2020 coffee year was estimated at 169,34 million 60kg bags, a number that represents a drop of 2,2% when compared to the volume produced in the 2018-2019 coffee year. In the same comparative terms, world production of Arabica coffee decreased by 5%, closing the current coffee year with 95,99 million bags produced, while Robusta coffee grew by 1,9% and ended the 2019-2020 coffee year with production 73,36 million 60kg bags.

In relation exclusively to the production of Brazilian Coffees, which is responsible for around 35% of world production, it is estimated that the country produced 58 million 60kg bags in the 2019-2020 coffee year, a volume that represented a reduction of 10,9% in production, compared to last coffee year. This drop is due to the low year in the biennial Arabica coffee cycle, which alternates lower production in one year with a larger harvest in the following year. Brazilian production of Robusta coffee closed the 2019-2020 coffee year with a total of 21 million bags produced, a volume 3,4% higher than in the previous coffee year, while Arabica coffee production reached 37 million bags, a number that represented a reduction of 17,4% compared to the same previous period.

With the exception of Brazil, coffee production in coffee year 2019-2020 increased in the five largest producing countries. Vietnam's harvest estimate is 31,5 million 60kg bags, 0,7% higher than last year. Colombia's production is estimated at 14,1 million bags, 1,7% higher than in 2018-2019. After three years of decline, Indonesian production increased by 16,5% and is estimated at 11,2 million bags. Regarding Ethiopia, the estimate is that the country will produce 7,7 million bags, a number that represents an increase of 2,1% compared to 2018/19.

The data and figures that allowed these analyzes to be carried out are contained in the September 2020 Coffee Market Report, which is produced and published monthly by the International Coffee Organization – OIC, and is available in full for consultation on Coffee Observatory do Coffee Research Consortium, coordinated by Embrapa Coffee. XNUMX% compared to last coffee year. Despite an increase in demand at the beginning of the pandemic, consumption fell in subsequent months, due to the slow recovery in out-of-home consumption and the global economic downturn.
