From the 3rd to the 7th of July, Vitória (ES) hosts the XXXIV Brazilian Congress of Nematology, which will bring together renowned speakers on the national and international scene. The event aims to promote the debate of ideas around the challenges and strategic solutions for management of phytoparasitic nematodes. Popularly known as worms, nematodes are a huge problem for increasing agricultural productivity around the world, despite their tiny size.

The organizing committee is chaired by researcher Dimmy Barbosa, from Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura (Cruz das Almas, BA), Unit of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation – Embrapa, linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), currently head of the Federal Superintendency of Agriculture of Espírito Santo. “In its 34th edition, the congress proposes an in-depth look at management tactics, the damage caused by nematodes and the current impact on agriculture and the economy in Brazil”, explains Barbosa.

In Brazil, damage caused by nematodes was first reported in the 19th century and, since then, it has been one of the main phytosanitary problems in several crops in our country, causing losses in productivity, quality and commercial value of products.

The event attracted the registration of 130 works in poster form classified into seven sessions: Biological control; Chemical control and epidemiology; Genetic control and lodging; Biology; Taxonomy, Molecular biology, Surveys and occurrences; and others.

This year, the fourth edition of SBN Kids takes place, a meeting of the management of Brazilian Society of Nematology and some researchers with undergraduate and postgraduate students to deal with issues in the area. “The SBN board will only participate in the beginning of SBN Kids 2017, to answer any questions or make any suggestions. The rest of the meeting will be up to the students to talk and formulate proposals. Soon after, we will have the SBN Assembly, when [students] will have to elect two representatives to the entity's Advisory Council”, informs Ricardo M. Souza, president of SBN.

Embrapa's participation
On the 3rd, the opening lecture “Advances and challenges of Brazilian agricultural research” will be given by Embrapa researcher Eliseu Roberto Alves, advisor to the presidency of Embrapa, with Alberto Duarte Vilarinhos, general head of Embrapa Cassava and Fruit Culture, as moderator.

On the 4th, at 13:55 pm, the round table “Soil fertility and plant nutrition in the management of phytonematodes” will be moderated by researcher Aldo Vilar Trindade. From 14:40 pm to 15:40 pm, Soil microbiology in biological control is the theme of the session presented by Mariana R. Fontenelle (Embrapa Hortaliças, Planaltina, DF).

On the 5th, the round table “Nematode-soil-plant interaction” will have the participation of two researchers from Embrapa: Henrique Debiasi (Embrapa Soja, Londrina, PR) talks about “Soil quality and nematode damage in production systems ” while Maria de Fátima Grossi de Sá (Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, Brasília, DF) addresses the “Mechanisms involved in nematode-plant interaction”. From 17pm to 18:30pm, there will be simultaneous presentations: “Management of nematodes in coconut and guava crops: challenges and perspectives”, by José Mauro Castro (Embrapa Semiárido, Petrolina, PE) and “Management of phytonematodes in vegetables”, by Jadir Borges Pinheiro (Embrapa Hortaliças, Planaltina, DF).

On the 6th, the theme “Management of phytonematodes in temperate fruit plants” will be presented by César Bauer Gomes (Embrapa Clima Temperado, Pelotas, RS) while Dimmy Barbosa presents the session “Management of phytonematodes in tropical fruit plants”.

Technologies exposed
At the Embrapa stand, several technologies will be disseminated, such as organic composting, the Network for the multiplication and transfer of cassava seed stalks with genetic and phytosanitary quality (Reniva) it's at rapid multiplication chamber for cassava propagative material. The stand will also promote the tasting of beiju, a delicacy produced from cassava starch (gum or cassava starch).

fruit growing
One of Embrapa's highlights at CBN must be pineapple BRS Vitória, destined for the Holy Spirit. Resistant to fusariosis, the main crop disease, the variety does not require the use of agrochemicals.

Among Embrapa's banana varieties, event participants will get to know the BRS Princess, which has the advantage of having a flavor very similar to apple bananas and being tolerant to Panama disease and resistant to yellow Sigatoka, which are the main diseases that attack the crop.

The public will also be able to ask questions about the BRS Rubra acerola, which can meet the demand of the domestic and foreign markets, both for the processing industry and for the consumption of fresh acerola fruit.

The CBN is carried out by Mapa, Embrapa, the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo and the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) and is sponsored by Adama, Stoller, Laboratório Farroupilha and Lallmand and the support of Syngenta, FMC, Dupont and the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy (Crea-ES).
