The Gross Value of Agricultural Production (VBP) in 2022 should reach R$1,176 trillion, according to October estimates. According to the latest data, the projection for revenue from crops is R$812,8 billion (up 0,4%) and from livestock, R$363,9 billion (down 4%). The estimated value for the year is slightly lower than that of 2021 (R$ 1,188 trillion), but the second highest in a 30-year historical series.

The factors that impacted the current estimate were the decline in soybean production in the south of the country due to climate problems and the reduction in domestic livestock prices.

“This year 2022 proves to be an almost exceptional year where so many products improved their VBP. In a list of those that contributed most to the results, cotton stands out with a real increase in VBP of 23,6%; peanuts 11,7%; banana 17,2%; potato 13,1%; coffee 29,5%; sugar cane 4,5%; beans 8,2%; cassava 13,9%; corn 13,35; tomatoes 22,0% and wheat 36,4%”, informs a note from the General Coordination of Public Policies of Mapa.

In livestock, the decline was recorded in the beef, pork and chicken sectors. “Livestock is experiencing a drop in domestic prices, which has impacted some items, such as beef, chicken and pork. On the other hand, milk and eggs have performed well”, explains the general coordinator of Public Policies, José Gasques.

States

Among the states, Mato Grosso leads with the highest VBP, followed by Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Goiás. Due to losses from soybean plantations in the South, the Southeast moved to second position in the regional ranking, previously occupied by the Region South.

VBP 2023

With rain forecast for 2023, the VBP for next year is estimated at R$1,212 trillion, 3% above what is projected for this year, according to preliminary information.

“Federal bodies, such as IBGE and Conab, point out that the climate will be better in 2023, which is good for agriculture”, highlights Gasques. According to Conab's forecast, soybean crops should expand over degraded pasture areas, showing a good recovery in grain production next year.

What is VBP

The VBP shows the evolution of crop and livestock performance throughout the year and corresponds to the gross revenue within the establishment. Calculated based on the production of the agricultural harvest and livestock, and the prices received by producers in the country's main markets, of the 26 largest agricultural products in Brazil. The real value of production, discounted for inflation, is obtained by the General Price Index - Internal Availability (IGP-DI) of Fundação Getúlio Vargas. The periodicity is monthly.
