Last night, the Acting Ambassador of the United Kingdom, Melanie Hopkins and the Chargé d'Affaires of Egypt in Brazil, Chargé d'Affaires, Mr. Karim Mohamed Hegazy, received some guests at the British Embassy to celebrate the handover of the presidency of COP26, in Glasgow, for COP27, in Sharm El-Sheikh.
In August 2021, we celebrated the accession of the first Brazilian cities, states and companies to the Race to Zero initiative. Currently, 12 states, more than 40 cities and 200 companies are part of the campaign in Brazil. Globally, the campaign mobilizes a coalition of the main net zero initiatives, representing 52 regions, 1.103 cities, 7.126 companies, 1.103 educational institutions, 541 financial institutions, more than 3.000 hospitals, 60 healthcare institutions and 24 institutions from other areas.
COP26 ended in November 2021 with 197 parties agreeing to the Glasgow Climate Pact, reaching consensus on the need for urgent climate action. This reduces the ambition gap, since zero emissions commitments cover 90% of the world economy - 30% more than two years ago, when the United Kingdom assumed the Presidency of COP26.
COP27 is approaching and with it the opportunity to continue the advances of COP26, increasing global climate ambition and boosting its implementation towards decarbonized growth and sustainable development.
The COP Presidency will end in November 2022 and will work closely with the COP27 Presidency to build a partnership that aligns priorities and plans, and that secures the legacy of the Glasgow Climate Pact and delivers impact and progress on the goals of the Climate Agreement. Melanie reinforced that “COP27 will have the mission of promoting equal dialogue between developed and developing nations. In this sense, it is extremely important that we are able to bring all parties to the table to achieve success in negotiations. It is necessary to monitor the implementation of the commitments made, so that we can analyze the level of progress. We need to work together – governments, companies and civil society – to find pragmatic solutions that promote sustainable development in Brazil and the world.”
During COP27, the British government will hold the event "From Glasgow to Sharm El-Sheikh: advances in Brazil's Race to Zero Campaign and new investments" at the Brazil Climate Action Hub in Sharm El-Sheikh to recognize actors who have made progress in its commitments since COP26.
