This guide helps in identifying Trichogramma species

Embrapa has made available for download the revised and expanded edition of the Trichogramma Identification Guide for Brazil. The publication brings together basic taxonomic information for the identification of this important group of parasitoids and is a reference for students, researchers, technicians and companies working in the area of ​​biological control.

The Guide is authored by Ranyse Querino, a researcher at Embrapa Cerrados, and Roberto A. Zucchi, senior professor at the Luiz de Queiroz Higher School of Agriculture (Esalq), in Piracicaba (SP). The work presents information on the Trichogramma species recorded in Brazil, their hosts, and the plants to which they are associated.

“The goal is to provide technical and practical support for the correct identification of Trichogramma and to highlight its importance in biological control programs,” explained Querino. According to the researcher, the Guide consolidates knowledge about the diversity of the genus in Brazil, the result of more than five decades of taxonomic studies, which have contributed to the advancement of both basic research, especially in taxonomy, and studies applied to biological control.

Since 2011 (1st edition), the Guide has been used in universities, research institutions, biological product companies, and producer associations in Brazil and some South American countries. "Considering the shortage of specialists in the identification of Trichogramma, it is hoped that this Guide will increasingly stimulate the training of taxonomists and technicians in the identification of this important natural enemy," stated the specialist.

This publication presents, in detail, the different steps necessary for the taxonomic study of Trichogramma, from specimen preparation to preservation. It also defines and illustrates the morphological characters used in species identification.

Do you know what Trichogramma are?

Trichogramma species are tiny parasitoid wasps that feed on insect eggs, widely used worldwide for biological control, especially of lepidopteran pests. Due to their effectiveness, they are among the most studied parasitoids in several countries, including Brazil. Currently, several species are commercially produced and successfully used in pest management programs both in Brazil and abroad.

The taxonomy of Trichogramma has advanced considerably in recent decades, revealing a great diversity of species. Of the 46 currently recorded in South America, 30 occur in Brazil, with 17 known exclusively from the country. Correct identification of species present in agricultural and forestry systems is a basic and fundamental step for the implementation and success of biological control programs.
