The total harvest of Brazilian Coffees that was estimated for the current year of 2022 totals a physical volume equivalent to 50,38 million 60kg bags. Of this total, 32,41 million bags are of the species Coffea arabica, which represents around 64% of the Brazilian harvest, and, additionally, 17,97 million bags of the species Coffea canephora (robusta and conilon), which corresponds to 36% of the total volume to be harvested in 2022. In this case, the total bags harvested in the current 2022 harvest will represent an increase of 5,6% compared to the previous harvest.

The average productivity of the 2022 harvest, at a national level, including the two coffee species (C. arabica and C. canephora), was calculated at 27,4 bags per hectare, which corresponds to an average increase of 3,7% in compared to the previous harvest. And, specifically, in relation to Arabica coffee, productivity was estimated at 22,3 bags per hectare, a volume that denotes an increase of 2% in relation to the productivity of the previous harvest. And, as for ‘robusta+conilon’ coffees, productivity will be 46,2 bags per hectare, which will correspond to an average increase of 6,6%, on the same comparative basis.

Such data on the production performance and productivity of Cafés do Brasil, now in focus, were obtained taking into account that 2,24 million hectares are currently being allocated to national coffee farming, of which 1,84 million hectares include all crops in production, and that, additionally, 401 thousand hectares are destined for areas in formation, in the five geographic regions of the country.

In this case, it appears that the total coffee growing area in Brazil, in this 2022 harvest, registered a slight increase of 0,6%, while the area in production increased by 1,8%, and, finally, the area in formation reduced by 4,4%, respectively, if these numbers are compared with the previous harvest.

In this context, it is worth adding that the data and statistical information that are allowing this analysis of Brazilian Coffee production to be carried out and disseminated were obtained from the Monitoring the Brazilian COFFEE harvest – Third Survey – September 2022, from the National Supply Company – Conab, which is available in full on Coffee Observatory, from the Consórcio Pesquisa Café, coordinated by Embrapa Café.

Complementing this analysis of the 2022 Brazilian Coffee harvest, it is also worth highlighting that the estimated area for the cultivation of coffee of the species C. arabica corresponds to 1,81 million hectares, a number that is approximately equivalent to 81% of the total area allocated to national coffee production. And, of this area, around 1,45 million hectares are areas in production, and the remainder, 364,6 thousand hectares, are areas in formation.

Regarding coffee of the species C. canephora (robusta and conilon), the total cultivated area is 425,3 thousand hectares, which is equivalent to 19% of the total cultivated in the country, and of this total, 388,8 thousand hectares are in production and additionally 36,5 thousand hectares in formation.

It is also worth clarifying that the Conab carries out and publishes four surveys of the Brazilian Coffee harvest annually. Thus, the first is held in December, with publication in January of the following year. The second in April, with release in May. The third in August and released in September. The fourth is scheduled for November and released in December, a period in which the harvest is already completed, and, therefore, the estimates are adjusted with the consolidated data collected in the field.
