The planting window for the second cotton crop is open in Tocantins.

The planting window for the second cotton crop in Tocantins, known as the "safrinha," has been open since January 16th and extends until March 15th. This information comes from the State Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapec), which reinforces the mandatory registration of cultivated areas at the end of the planting period, as per state legislation.

According to Deyvid Rocha Brito, the technical manager for the State Program for Major Crops at Adapec, cotton cultivation has been growing in the state, which requires increased attention to plant health and pest control. Among the main targets is the cotton boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis), considered the most significant pest of the crop.

The registration of areas must be done using a form available on the Adapec website, which must be completed and submitted to one of the Agency's units. The procedure is annual and mandatory. Producers who have more than one state registration need to register each area separately.

In the 2024/25 crop season, the area of ​​cotton registered with Adapec reached 14,5 hectares, a growth of 58% compared to the previous cycle.

According to the Agency, the cotton boll weevil can infest crops from the beginning of flower bud emergence until harvest, with the potential to develop four to six generations in a single cycle. Without proper management, losses can reach 70% of production.
