Climate favors an increase in grain harvest expectations in Mato Grosso do Sul

The production of grains grown in the second harvest and winter cereals is expected to increase in Mato Grosso do Sul crops, as announced by the National Supply Company (Conab) on Thursday (12/05), during the 8th survey of the 2021 harvest. /2022. According to the updated numbers, the state should reach a production of 20,7 million tons, 9,1% more than the previous harvest, when it reached 18,9 million tons. The result, according to the study, is due to the climate behavior from March onwards, which presents rainfall with a volume and, mainly, distribution, suitable for the good development of crops.

Regarding corn, the production estimate for the 2nd crop in the state shows an increase of 2,4% in relation to the previous survey, exceeding 11 million tons. This fact arises from the expectation of higher local average productivity of the crop, situated at 5.100 kg/ha.

Sorghum appears with a new increase in cultivated area, in the order of 11,7%, as producers took advantage of the moisture available in the soil and the larger sowing window for this cereal to expand crops.

On the other hand, wheat and beans 2nd harvest show a reduction in the productive area in relation to the previous harvest, justified mainly by the high production costs of these crops and the lower availability of seed saved in the previous cycle due to the low productivity and quality of the grains, which were heavily impacted by frost at the end of June last year. Regarding productivity, it is estimated that it will return to normal levels.

For oats, initial information shows a slight increase in planted area, as there are no major investments in production, as producers use saved seeds, mostly without fertilization, in plots of lower fertility and carry out basic pest control and diseases. If the weather behaves well and the price remains at levels that provide an economic return, the harvest is carried out; otherwise, it is only used as ground cover.
