The Department of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo, through the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA-APTA) and the Coordination of Sustainable Rural Development (CATI/CDRS), publishes the third survey of the forecast and estimate of the agricultural harvest for the main crops grown in the State of São Paulo in 2021. The results for the 2020/2021 harvest were obtained by collecting information from 645 municipalities in the State of São Paulo.

The results indicate a slight expansion of agriculture in São Paulo in 2020/21 compared to 2019/2020 of 0,56% of planted area and a loss of 2,35% in the volume to be produced, due to lower land productivity of 2,91 %.

The set of annual crops shows an increase of 2,06% in production and 0,23% in land productivity. More specifically for the grains group, the indicators point to a 0,33% loss in productivity and a 1,68% increase in production due to the 2,0% increase in the planted area.

In the group of perennial and semi-evergreen crops, there was a drop in production (-4,02%), influenced by lower productivity (-4,12%), as the area remained practically stable (+0,13%). The lower coffee production caused by the two-year low cycle contributed to this negative result.

The next survey of agricultural crops in the State of São Paulo will be carried out in September 2021 and will bring the final results of annual crops, perennial crops and partial estimates of the fourth survey for industrial sugarcane, seedling onion and orange crops. to the 2020/21 harvest. It will also bring the first information on the intention to plant annual crops in the 2021/22 summer harvest.

Check out a summary of the results for the main crops

Peanut

The State of São Paulo produced, in the 2020/21 agricultural harvest, 26,95 million bags of 25 kg of peanut grains, equivalent to 673,81 thousand tons. This result reflects an increase of 7,8% in relation to the previous harvest, due to the 12,2% increase in the planted area.

Banana

In June, the fourth monitoring of the 2020/21 harvest of this crop was carried out, which signaled, in relation to the previous harvest, an increase in area (1,5%) and production (1,9%), and a decrease in productivity (-0,7 .1,1%). The activity could reach a total of 54,8 million tons of fruit, in a productive area of XNUMX thousand hectares.

With the exchange rate devaluation, the good quality of the fruit, in addition to the strong external demand, led to good export performance in the first half of 2021. Exports totaled 55,68 thousand tons, an amount 4,62% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2020, and the amount earned was U$$18,46 million, 19,13% higher than last year's partial. The flagship was the sale of dwarf bananas from the Registro region. This product has high quality, which boosts its commercialization in European markets and Mercosur countries.

Drought potato

The final results for dry potato cultivation point to a reduction in the planting area of 7,2% in relation to the previous harvest, with a slight increase in production of 0,6%, with gains of 8,3% in productivity agricultural. The occupied area increased from 6,7 thousand hectares to 6,2 thousand hectares, production from 188,7 to 189,8 thousand tons and productivity from 28.208 to 30.558 kg/ha.

Coffee

The fourth coffee harvest forecast campaign in the State of São Paulo (June/2021) indicated a slight increase in production (0,4%) compared to the previous survey, totaling in this new estimate a harvest of 4,31 million 60 kg bags of processed coffee.

In this cycle of low crop production, the expected result for São Paulo's production of processed coffee of 4,31 million bags (258,9 thousand tons) is 32,2% below that recorded in the final estimate for the 2019/20 harvest. (high cycle), when 6,36 million bags were obtained.

Sugarcane for Industry

The forecast for São Paulo's sugarcane harvest is expected to total 429,46 million tons, a negative variation of around 1,8% compared to 2019/20, as a result of the 2,1% decrease in agricultural productivity. This, throughout the harvest, could end up at 76.727 kg/ha, a value similar to that obtained by CONAB, caused by weather conditions, lower rainfall, low temperatures and the frost that occurred at the end of June in several producing regions. Depending on the stage of crop development, planting or regrowth, these regions may suffer major losses. Furthermore, the forecast of new cold fronts in July and August with the occurrence of even more severe frosts worries producers.

Orange

The preliminary estimate of the 2020/21 agricultural harvest for orange cultivation, resulting from the survey carried out in all municipalities in the State of São Paulo in June this year, is 303,5 million boxes of 40,8 kg (12.383 thousand tons) , a volume 4,5% lower than that obtained in the previous agricultural harvest. The period of water deficiency, mainly in the months of March and April 2021, when the fruits are already at a more advanced stage of development, and the intensification of high daytime temperatures justify the compromise of this harvest, as they negatively affect important stages of vegetative development of orchards, such as flowering and fruit development. This climate situation was noted in a large part of the orange producing region, mainly in the northwest region of the state (Votuporanga and São José do Rio Preto regions). However, this effect is greatly mitigated in the southwest region (Avaré and Itapetininga regions), where oranges destined for table use predominate, using irrigation.

Cassava for industry and table

The results of the June survey regarding the cultivation of cassava for table use indicate a 1,9% reduction in the area, going from 19,8 thousand hectares to 19,4 thousand hectares. Despite the reduction in area, production increased by 1,5%, reflecting a 3,8% higher productivity and reaching 16.625 kg/ha. Campinas, Sorocaba and Presidente Prudente are the main producing EDRs.

Soybean

The results of the 2020/2021 crop year were very positive: the area under production was expanded by 4,8%, reaching 1.154,3 thousand hectares, productivity was 3.527 kg/ha, an increase of 1,2% in relation to previous year and, as a result, production was 4.070,7 thousand tons, 6,1% higher than 2019/20. It is noteworthy that this increase occurred in comparison to the highest production ever occurred in the state, recorded in 2019/20.

In relation to the development of the crop, it is observed that the delay in starting cultivation, due to the lack of rain in 2020, was compensated by the favorable climate in the productive period, favoring the establishment of productivity.

Tomato

The June survey concluded the 2020/21 harvest of packaged tomatoes or for table winter harvest (fresh consumption). The final result registered an expansion of 28,2% in the planted area compared to the previous harvest, from 3,9 thousand hectares to 5,0 thousand hectares, in production there was an increase of 32,1%, with a volume produced of 385,3, 3,1 thousand tons and gains of 78,7% in productivity (XNUMX thousand kg/ha).

Adding the two harvests (summer and winter) of the 2020/21 agricultural year for packaged tomatoes in the State of São Paulo, the final estimate indicated a total production of 872,6 thousand tons, 13,0% higher compared to the last harvest, reflecting the 11,2% expansion in the cultivated area (from 10,1 thousand hectares to 11,2 thousand hectares) and gains of 1,6% in productivity (78,0 t/ha).

In the case of trailing tomatoes (intended for industry), the survey carried out in June is the second for the 2020/21 harvest, and the results confirm the significant drops in area and production highlighted in the April 2021 survey. , the decreases are 43,8% in cultivated area (1,8 thousand hectares), 47,3% for production (expected to be harvested 143,7 thousand tons) and losses of 6,2% in productivity (80,1 .XNUMX t/ha).

Wheat

Compared to the last harvest, 2019/20, the result of this survey, from June 2021, shows growth of 9,9% in area and 16,4% in production. São Paulo's wheat producers increase their participation in area distribution and increase cereal production in the state. The numbers calculated in the fourth survey of the forecast and estimate of the 2020/21 wheat harvest indicate an increase of 4,8% in the cultivated area (110,3 thousand hectares) in relation to last April's survey, and growth in the predicted production of 11,2%, totaling 361,7 thousand tons. The positive adjustment in area and production increased expected productivity by 6,1%. The growth in area compared to the April survey is probably associated with the fact that areas not yet reported began to appear in this June survey.

Triticale

The numbers from the third survey of the São Paulo harvest indicate, in relation to the previous harvest, growth of 89,1% in the cultivated area with 4,0 thousand hectares, 79,1% in expected production (11,1 thousand tons) and a drop of 5,3 .2.774% in yield (90 kg/ha). The crop is developed mainly in the regions of Avaré, Sorocaba and Itapeva, located in the south-southwest regions of the state and which account for XNUMX% of the planted area.
