Delay in the pace of soybean planting could compromise production potential
CESB experts warn that crops may suffer from irregular rainfall and greater susceptibility to pests
With the consolidation of the 2019 coffee harvest, the expectation of lower production than that presented in the previous year was confirmed. The influence exerted by the physiological effects arising from the negative biennial period, some weather events recorded in important coffee growing regions during the cycle also impacted the final numbers, analyzes Conab - Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento.
Overall, approximately 49,31 million processed bags were obtained in 2019, representing a 20% decrease compared to the previous year. Below you can see details by producing state:
Sul de Minas (South and Central-West): reduction in the area under production and the average yield of the crop compared to the previous year, thus reflecting a final production lower than the 17,9 million bags harvested in 2018. Approximately 13,98 million.
Cerrado Mineiro (Triângulo, Alto Paranaíba and Noroeste): decrease in area, average productivity and production, reaching 4,59 million processed bags. Zona da Mata Mineira (Zona da Mata, Rio Doce and Central): reduction in area and average productivity. The final volume harvested was 5,35 million bags.
North of Minas (Norte, Jequitinhonha and Mucuri): production lower than that obtained in 2018, expected to be 628,7 thousand processed bags.
The climatic conditions observed throughout the development of the crop fluctuated and, linked to this, the effects of the negative biennial period brought a decrease in average yield and total production compared to 2018, reaching around 13,49 million bags, with an average productivity of 34,27scs/ ha.
With predominantly Arabica coffee production and a negative biannual harvest, the predicted reduction in relation to 2018 was confirmed. There were 4,34 million bags processed, representing a decrease of 31,1% compared to last year.
Decrease in production area and average yield, resulting in production below that obtained in 2018. In total, 3 million bags were harvested. The three producing regions of the state (Cerrado, Planalto and Atlântico) presented lower numbers than those presented in the last harvest.
Average productivity has grown, especially due to the use of genetic materials with greater productive potential and the more technical management that producers have implemented in their crops. Thus, even with a reduction in the production area, the final volume obtained was higher than that recorded in 2018. There are around 2,2 million bags of coffee, exclusively of the conilon type, harvested this year (an increase of 11,1% in compared to last year).
The production area and average productivity reduced by 1,6% and 3,2%, respectively, when compared to 2018. These variations resulted in a lower production than that presented in the previous harvest, remaining at 953 thousand bags of coffee.
Production was 29,2% lower than the 346 thousand bags processed in the last cycle. In total, they were produced.
The increases seen in the production area and average yield boosted the final result of the harvest, which closed at 249,3 thousand processed bags. Around 245 thousand bags of coffee were processed in 2019, this number was 27,6% higher than the production achieved in the previous season.
Decrease of 9,5% in the area under production, but growth of 28,8% in average yield, both in relation to the previous harvest, contributing to a production of 121,4 thousand bags of processed coffee, 16,5% more than in the last harvest.
