Shell Brazil, Petrobras, and Ccarbon/USP launched Carbon Countdown, a project to measure, in a standardized way and on a national scale, carbon stocks above and below ground. The initiative covers all Brazilian biomes and includes agricultural areas and native ecosystems.

The project receives an investment of approximately R$ 100 million, originating from the Research, Development and Innovation Clause of oil and gas exploration and production contracts, with application regulated and monitored by the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels). As a research and development project, Carbon Countdown creates a unique scientific baseline for carbon stocks, with methodologies recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. All data will be publicly accessible.

The project will be carried out by Ccarbon, based at Esalq, with the participation of universities and research centers in all regions of Brazil. The work will last five years and involves national integration of scientific and field teams.

The survey covers 6.500 demarcated areas, with over 250 soil samples, in addition to vegetation samples and approximately 400 records of complementary attributes. The project structures a national research network with centers in the six Brazilian biomes, with unified methodologies, technical safety protocols, ethical standards, and data consistency.
