The October Agricultural Bulletin shows that prices paid to Santa Catarina producers of beans, wheat, soybeans and meat increased in September. According to monitoring by the Epagri Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning (Epagri/Cepa), the best results were for black beans, which grew 25,05% compared to the previous month, and for wheat, which increased 17,28% compared to September of the previous year.

The Agricultural Bulletin is a monthly publication by Epagri/Cepa that presents updated data on crop and market monitoring for the main agricultural products in Santa Catarina. Below, check out more data from the monitoring for the month of September.

Bean

In September, the prices received by Santa Catarina producers of carioca beans had a positive monthly variation of 11,30%. For black beans, the average price received by producers increased by 25,05%. By the end of the month, approximately 17% of the area destined for bean cultivation had already been planted. The condition of the crops is considered good.

Wheat

In September, the average prices received by wheat producers in Santa Catarina began to react. The monthly variation increased by 4,33%. The annual variation, in real terms, increased by 17,28%. The condition of the crops is considered good.

In September, the estimated planted area is just over 121 thousand hectares, which represents a reduction of 11,8% compared to the last harvest. The average state productivity is estimated at 3.565 kg/ha, an increase of 59,4%. So far, the expectation is that state production should grow by 40,6%, reaching 433 thousand tons, a volume very close to the record achieved in the 2022/23 harvest, which was 482 thousand tons.

Soybean

In September, soybean prices in the Santa Catarina market showed a 2,6% increase compared to the previous month. The 2024/25 Santa Catarina soybean harvest begins to be sown with greater intensity in October. An increase of 1,78% in the planted area is estimated, reaching 768 thousand hectares in this first harvest.

The expectation is an increase of 10,8% in average productivity, reaching 3.837 kg/ha. With this, an increase of 12,77% in production is expected, with a harvested volume of approximately 2,9 million tons of soybeans in the 1st harvest.

Corn

In September, the average monthly price paid to producers in Santa Catarina indicates continued recovery, which could be more significant by the end of the year. At the end of September, prices exceeded R$60,00 per bag in some markets in the state. Prices reflect the greater domestic demand for the grain, the off-season and competition with exports, in addition to factors in the external market.

For this 2024/25 corn harvest, the reduction in the planted area is expected to reach 10% by the last survey. The expected average productivity, however, is expected to grow around 24%, reaching 8.468 kg/ha. Thus, an increase of 11,8% in production is expected, with a harvested volume of approximately 2,3 million tons of corn.

Rice

The grain has stable prices, but at a higher level than the previous year. Lower prices are expected in the 2024/25 harvest, due to the recovery of the planted area in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina and an increase in the domestic supply of the grain. In foreign trade, exports fell 71% between January and September 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. Imports, on the other hand, increased 51,18%. The 2024/25 harvest is expected to see an increase in productivity (8,7 t/ha) and an estimated production of 1,27 million tons. Crops are developing normally and in good condition.

Garlic

Wholesale garlic prices remained practically stable last month. In Santa Catarina, the average price paid to producers in August was 15,50/kg for class 4-5 garlic. The 2024/25 harvest in Santa Catarina has been fully planted. The condition of the crops is good to very good. From January to September 2024, imports were 115,67 thousand tons, 31,05% higher than the same period last year.

Onion

The Santa Catarina onion harvest has been fully planted. Crop conditions are good in 91% of the area. In September and early October, prices for this vegetable fell sharply due to increased domestic supply. The average price paid to producers in Santa Catarina was R$60,00 per 20kg bag, an increase of 67% compared to September.

In the wholesale market in September, class 3 onions were sold at R$84,00/20 kg bag, a reduction of 15,84% compared to the average price in August. October began with a new reduction in wholesale prices, falling to R$76,50/20 kg bag, a reduction of 9,47% compared to the average price in September.

Apple

Between August and September 2024, the average wholesale price of apples in Santa Catarina increased, but with an expected reduction in October due to the quality and competition from imported fruits with competitive prices on the market. The expectation for the 2024/25 harvest compared to the previous one is a 55,5% recovery in state production.
